Besides voting in a Presidential Election, Euless voters will also be electing three people for the City Council and voting on a City proposition. The proposition is about whether the Euless Crime Control and Prevention District (CCPD) and its 1/4¢ sales tax should be continued for another 20 years. The CCPD provides equipment, technology and staffing to reduce crime and increase your safety and quality of life. It funds programs such as Neighborhood Crime Watch, Coffee with a Cop, National Night Out, Police Summer Camp, Citizens Police Academy, the EPIC program for elementary school students and more. Euless residents voted for the CCPD in 1995 and again in 2000. As usual, I will be casting my vote at this upcoming election. I hope to see you there! Did you know…? Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling or broiling. If you have to leave (even for a short time), turn off the stove. • If you are simmering, baking, roasting or boiling food, check it regularly. Remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking. • You have to be alert when cooking. You won’t be alert if you are sleepy, have taken medicine or drugs, or consumed alcohol that makes you drowsy. • Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when you’re cooking. If a smal grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame. Turn off the burner, and leave the pan covered until it is completely cool. • Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Although fires can occur anywhere, four out of five U.S. fire deaths occur at home each year. Share this information with your loved ones, so they will know what to do in the event of a fire. Special Called Election On February 25, 2020, the Euless City Council called an election regarding an ordinance imposing scheduling and pay requirements for employers with more than 200 employees in the City. This ordinance was not proposed by the City Council or City Staff. In accordance with Article IV, Section 3 of the Euless City Charter, an initiative petition was submitted to the City Secretary on January 17, 2020 proposing the ordinance. The initiative petition was signed by a sufficient number of qualified voters, triggering the requirement under the City Charter for the City Council to consider the ordinance. During the City Council meeting, the City Council chose not to adopt the proposed ordinance. Therefore, according to the City Charter, the City Council called an election for November 3, 2020 to allow voters to determine whether the proposed ordinance should be adopted. This special election will be held in conjunction with the Federal, State and local elections. A copy of the proposed ordinance can be found online at www.eulesstx.gov/elections or can be mailed to you by calling 817-685-1419. Euless citizens will consider extending the quarter cent sales tax used for crime control and prevention. The Crime Control and Prevention District Board called an election for Nov. 3, 2020 for consideration of the continuation of the CCPD and a 20-year extension of a quarter cent sales and use tax that is charged on taxable purchases in Euless. Euless residents passed the CCPD sales tax in 1995 and again in 2000 which allowed the City to receive this funding for 25 years now. This funding is exclusively for expenses for the Police Department and currently funds 19 Police Officers, a Crime Victim Liaison, a Mental Health Peace Officer, Regional SWAT Team, radio communications equipment, EPIC program (for elementary schools), community programs and technology upgrades. Early and regular voting will take place at the same time and place as the General City Council Election listed in this newsletter.
