HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-10-01 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board October 1, 2012 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Carroll Scott, Randy Jones, Darrel Knobloch, and alternate Tiffany Smith. Members absent: John Raab and alternate Carl Miller. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Recreation Superintendent Michael Davenport and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Ernie Flores (Chick-Fil-A), Council Member Leon Hogg and Steve and Loretta Doty. INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the September 10, 2012 regular meeting. Darrel Knobloch made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Carroll Scott. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports Carroll Scott— McCormick Park, Preserve at McCormick Park— reported no items of concern Tiffany Smith —West Park, Wilshire Park— reported no items of concern Randy Jones - Midway Park, Blessing Branch Park — reported that the fence adjacent to Blessing Branch Park needs to be repaired (fence is part of the apartment complex) Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 October 1, 2012 Darrel Knobloch - Bob Eden Park, Trailwood Park— reported no items of concern Chairman Owens—J. A. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park— reported no items of concern Chairman Owens reported on Special Events: • Texas Junior Angler's Fishing event—held on September 22— 150 people attended • Stars Over Euless—Saturday, October 6—8:30 p.m. — 10:00 p.m. — Bob Eden Park • Fitness Fun Run —Saturday, October 13—9:30 a.m. — Bob Eden Park Chairman Owens mentioned that since Travis Riffle (Reflection Park & Villages of Bear Creek Park) is no longer on the Board and Carl Miller (South Euless Park & Heritage Park) is out of the country, let him know if anybody would like to add one of these to their park reports. Randy Jones said he would take South Euless and Heritage parks and Darrel will take Reflection and the Villages of Bear Creek parks. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens said the October 2012 Volunteer of the Month award goes to Amber Ali and her son Ashar. Our October nomination is a lady and her son who recently joined our Family of Volunteers Program, and who has volunteered for several special events. The events that they have volunteered for include: Arbor Daze, Movie in the Park, Texas Junior Angler Fishing event and the upcoming Stars Over Euless event. Chairman Owens said the plaque would be delivered to them since they were not able to attend the meeting tonight. Ill. Beautification Award of the Month Chairman Owens said the October 2012 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Nicole Nguyen at 1802 Eden Trail. This yard has a well-manicured green lawn, with colorful Knock-Out Roses, Purple Jew, Celosia and other blooming flowers. They have also planted an assortment of shrubbery that runs along the front of the house which is very attractive. The owner takes great pride in the work that has been done in the yard. Thank you for helping to beautify Euless. Chairman Owens said the plaque would be delivered to Mrs. Nguyen since she was not able to attend the meeting. Chairman Owens presented the October 2012 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month to Chick-Fil-A. They have planted Crepe Myrtles, Periwinkles, Fountain grasses and Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 October 1, 2012 other blooming flowers around the property. The property is well manicured with hedges, other shrubbery and an assortment of trees. It is efforts like yours that make Euless a great place to work and live. Thank you for contributing to the beautification of our city. Operating Manager Ernie Flores was present to receive the award and said Chick-Fil-A is very excited about this award and said they have been a partner with the city for several years. IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Carroll Scott reported on the following for September 1st—30th: Total man hours- 328.00 o 63.00 Horticulture o 89.00 Forestry o 176.00 Greenhouse o 0 Special Projects o 4.00 Training • There were no trees planted and no tree related purchases V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report— Michael Davenport Recreation Superintendent Michael Davenport reported on the following: • Upcoming special events- October • Senior Holiday Luncheon — November • New program for the EFLC fitness center b. Community Services Report— Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald reported on the following: • Thanked Ernie Flores and Chick-Fil-A for everything they do for our department • Parks at Texas Star—parking lot construction • Update on construction of the Aquatic Center • Staff changes • Senior Luncheon - November • Kenny Marchant's Veteran's Fair- November Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. VI. Other New Business Chairman Owens said there was no new business for discussion. VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Council Member Hogg said the tax rate will remain the same.
