HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-12-10 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes December 10, 2012 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m. The meeting was held at the Texas Star Conference Center, 1400 Texas Star Parkway, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Gary Barnhill, Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Dan Burger, Michele Burger, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Betty Fuller, Helen Gleghorn, Bill Golden, Norma Lively, Don Martin, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Shirley Mercer, Iva Nail, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Peggy Vandiver, Helen Voss, Glenn Walker and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg, Mayor Mary Lib Saleh, Tom and Sue Stover, Council Member Linda Martin and Andy Weinzapfel. STAFF PRESENT Gary McKamie, City Manager Loretta Getchell, Deputy City Manager Chris Barker, Assistant City Manager Kim Sutter, City Secretary Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES On page 2, under Status of Current Projects, Item #4, Uselton is spelled with one "s" instead of two. Michele Burger's name is spelled with one "1" instead of two. Michele Burger made a motion to approve the minutes with the corrections. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported the beginning balance for November was $6,231.92. There was a deposit of$5,217.55. The balance as of the meeting was $11,449.47. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Wilshire Elementary school toured the facilities on November 15, 2012. There were one-hundred and twenty students. 2. Heritage Park Christmas had approximately six-hundred people. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. McCormick Barn—Members will work on the barn display after the holidays. HPC MTG 121012 Page 1 • 2. Museum Sub-committee—Helen Voss will contact the teacher at Trinity High School about the mural project. She also discussed the need to rope off various areas in the Museum. 3. Evolving History—Veva Lou Massey reported that Mr. Massey photographed a couple of locations for the project. 4. Euless Marker Program—Weldon Cannon discussed the following: • Regarding the Cannon House marker: the foundry received the payment from the City but the application was lost. Staff will follow up to ensure the project is completed in a timely manner. • Discussed the status of the Fuller House and Himes Log House markers. He mentioned several possible locations where the markers can be posted. 5. Himes Log House—Issues with handrails on both sides of the building as well as several artifacts inside the house have been corrected by Parks. 6. Fuller House—Bill Golden discussed the need for furniture and/or artifacts to display in the den. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Thanked the staff and the City of Euless for all their support over the years. 2. Announced that Barbara Collier will be the new Vice-chairman. Mrs. Collier looks forward to working with Mr. Golden. STAFF REPORTS 1. Staff reported the following: • Currently working on the "How We Lived"brochure as well as other handouts. • Staff installed a hook for the lid on the well, removed trip hazards from the Log House walkway, placed a lock on the barn door, moved the corn grinder into the Barn, decorated the live Christmas tree and cleaned the facilities. • Staff members were happy that Suzanne Hendrickson is back. Ms. Hendrickson also expressed her pleasure at returning to the City of Euless. OTHER REPORTS 1. Mayor Mary Lib Saleh expressed her appreciation for everything the committee has done over the years. 2. Members reported the following regarding the Christmas in the Park event: • Iris Elliott asked for a sign to go in front of the Museum. Bill Golden mentioned using the sandwich board and indicated that a large sign would be needful during large events such as the Greek Food Festival and the Heritage Park Christmas event. • Members asked for signs to mark entrances and exits to the Himes House and Fuller House at next year's Christmas event. • A lot of docents are needed to monitor different rooms in the Museum during large events such as the Greek Festival and the Heritage Park Christmas event. • Norma Lively noted that a straight razor is missing from the collection. Betty Fuller indicated the razor may be on display at the Library. • Dan Burger was impressed with all that the Euless Historical Preservation Committee has done. • Don Martin and Weldon Cannon gave tours of the Log House during the whole event. They did a great job. HPC MTG 121012 Page 2 • David Massey mentioned that a family with a young boy visited the Military room. The young boy expressed surprise when he recognized Mr. Massey as the same person in one of the photographs on the Wall of Fame. • Mr. Cannon indicated that a black lady toured the Himes House. She asked Mr. Cannon if the cotton plant he had on display was like the cotton that slaves used to pick. Mr. Cannon answered yes and explained some of the history. The lady asked if she can have some of the cotton so she can talk to her daughter about it and Mr. Cannon gladly allowed her to take some. • Perry Brockmeyer did a great job with tours of the outhouse. He shared funny stories about the kids' reactions to the corn husk. • Betty Fuller is proud to be a member of the committee. She thanked the staff for their support. • Helen Gleghorn discussed the idea of a "Euless Then & Euless Now" project. • Joe Cannon mentioned that in the past, no one ever knew where Euless was. He is proud to live in Euless. • Mavy Wright and Barbara Collier volunteered to take down all the Christmas decorations. 3. Council Member Linda Martin thanked everyone for their dedication to the preservation of history. 4. Council Member Leon Hogg reported that a cement slab has been poured at the Calloway Cemetery tabernacle. New benches and trash cans, etc. have been added to the cemetery as well. 5. Bill and Sue Stover may be able to volunteer more hours with the Committee. They indicated their continued interest in serving the Historical Committee. ADJOURNMENT Peggy Vandiver made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved.
