ITEM 5 - STAFF REPORT— SHELTER OPERATIONS
JT mentioned that Animal Control Officer, Kenny Spargur's dad passed away last
Sunday. One of our employees that recently went through some of the training to be an
Animal Control Officer misunderstood when the test would be administered and missed
the testing date. He will be getting back into the program.
ITEM 6 - SHELTER STATISTICS REPORT
Chairman Maas commented that overall numbers are down on animals picked up, fewer
released to owners and fewer adopted, more euthanatized which were feral cats. Larry
said domestic cats don't get euthanatized. Bites were up in third quarter of 2012,
animals in the shelter appear to be consistent from one quarter to next and from one
year to the next. Last quarter of 2012 euthanasias were down, more animals were
picked up, cats and dogs adopted was up, animal bites were down for last quarter of
last year.. JT noted that the animals picked up were mostly wildlife. Chairman Maas
commented that one quarter to the next, appear to be a yearly trend.
ITEM 7 — DOG DAZE EVENT REPORT
Chairman Maas recommended Saturday, May 11, 2013, - second Saturday in May.
Chairman Maas said she has been in contact with the AKC about having a microchip
clinic at the Dog Daze Event. AKC would provide the publicity for it and would help the
shelter purchase cheap microchips. She should know by the April board meeting if the
clinic will be possible. If the AKC sponsors the clinic, the chips will cost between $15
and $20 —that's with the owner filling out the paperwork. The micro chipping would cost
between $40 and $50 without the AKC's sponsorship. The time for Dog Daze will stay
the same — 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., vaccinations will be available at reduced prices.
Chairman Maas will give the shelter staff a list of vaccination prices once she knows
what her costs are. Ron will notify Betsy Deck so she can put on city's calendar.
ITEM 8 —SHELTER FACILITY REPORT
Discussed condition of the shelter. Chairman Maas noted that the crown molding was
coming loose in some places. Purchase of dog wash tub that was discussed at last
meeting was put on hold. Hot and cold water was plumbed into dog runs using water
hoses. Need to paint and install some eye hooks for holding the dogs and something to
hold the hoses. Staff will do the work. Chairman Maas will check on the cost of
purchasing a plastic wash tub that would work for bathing small dogs. It sits on a
pedestal and requires no plumbing.
Larry reported that the gate at the dog park has been replaced.
