HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-06-03 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board June 3, 2013 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:01 p.m. on Monday, June 3, 2013, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Secretary Randy Jones. Other Board Members present: Tiffany Smith, Carroll Scott, and alternate Steve Doty. Members absent: John Raab and alternate Carl Miller. NOTE: Chairman Owens arrived at 7:17 p.m. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Kathy and David Epperson, Mary Fehlberg and mother Karen Fehlberg, and Lisa Cassidy (Colonial Grand at Bear Creek Apartments). INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Secretary Jones asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the May 6, 2013 regular meeting. Steve Doty made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Carroll Scott. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports Carroll Scott—Preserve at McCormick Park, McCormick Park- reported no items of concern Tiffany Smith—Bob Eden Park,Trailwood Park—reported no items of concern Steve Doty —J. A. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park, Villages of Bear Creek Park — reported no items of concern Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 June 3, 2013 Randy Jones—South Euless Park, Heritage Park, Reflection Park—reported no items of concern Chairman Owens—West Park, Wilshire Park—reported no items of concern Secretary Jones thanked everyone for their reports. II. Volunteer of the Month Secretary Jones said the June 2013 Volunteer of the Month award goes to Mary Fehlberg, Trinity High School National Honor Society's President. Our June nomination is a young lady that was nominated and chosen as her High School's National Honor Society's 2012-2013 President. With the successes that she has attained, it is clear why she was chosen for the role. For the last several months, she was called upon to recruit and arrange students from her organization, to volunteer and participate in our cities special events. The events and number of volunteers that she recruited included 10 volunteers for the 2013 Hometown Food Bank, 15 volunteers for the 2013 Texas Trash Off, and 48 volunteers for the 2013 Arbor Daze Festival. Her administrative abilities supplied us with over 70 volunteers and over 150 volunteer hours. Secretary Jones presented Mary Fehlberg with the plaque and she thanked Board Members for the award. Ill. Beautification Award of the Month Secretary Jones mentioned that each year from May through October we do a residential and business/civic/governmental Yard of the Month award. Secretary Jones said the June 2013 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to David and Kathy Epperson at 513 Holliday Lane. This yard is beautifully landscaped with day lilies, crepe myrtles, yaupon holly's and lots of mature oak trees. The property is well maintained and a great attraction to the neighborhood. The owners take great pride in the work that has been done in their yard. Thank you for helping to beautify Euless. Mrs. Epperson thanked the Board for the award. Secretary Jones said the June 2013 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to Colonial Grand at Bear Creek Apartments at 1200 Fuller Wiser Road. They have planted knockout roses, liriope grass, coleus, begonias, sweet potato vine, burford holly and dwarf yaupon holly along the front entrance to the property. The property is well maintained and a Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 June 3, 2013 great attraction to the surrounding neighborhood as well as to their renters. It is efforts like yours that make Euless a great place to work and live. Thank you for contributing to the beautification of our city. Secretary Jones presented the plaque to Lisa Cassidy who thanked the Board Members for the award. IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Carroll Scott reported on the following for May 1St—31St: Total man hours- 132.00 o 80.00 Horticulture o 4.00 Forestry o 40.00 Greenhouse o 8.00 Special Projects o 0 Training • There were no trees planted and no tree related purchases V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report—Suzanne Hendrickson Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson was not in attendance tonight. b. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald reported on the following: • Pictures of the aquatics center construction • Thanked the Board Members for visiting the new aquatics center • Thanked the parks staff for all their hard work in helping with the final touches to the aquatics center • Summer camp update Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. VI. Discussion of Master Plan Chairman Owens opened this item for discussion of the master plan and asked Board Members to submit any comments or suggestions to Ray McDonald. Chairman Owens mentioned that this item will be placed on the next agenda. Randy Jones suggested updating the restrooms at Bob Eden Park. VII. Other New Business Steve Doty toured the new aquatics center and said the parks staff did a great job. Chairman Owens mentioned the facility is a great addition to our parks system and it will be greatly used. He also mentioned our parks staff is very talented and added many of the art pieces around the pool. Chairman Owens reminded Board Members of the Movies in the Park scheduled for Saturday, June 15th at the Villages of Bear Creek Park. Chairman Owens said there will be no meeting in July.
