HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-05-06 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board May 6, 2013 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Randy Jones, Tiffany Smith, Carroll Scott, John Raab and alternate Steve Doty. Members absent: alternate Carl Miller. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Council Member Leon Hogg, George and Barbara Vittas and Loretta Doty. INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the April 1, 2013 regular meeting. Randy Jones made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Carroll Scott. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports Steve Doty—J. A. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park, Villages of Bear Creek Park — reported no items of concern Randy Jones—South Euless Park, Heritage Park, Reflection Park—reported no items of concern John Raab—Midway Park, Blessing Branch Park, Parks at Texas Star- reported no items of concern Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 May 6,2013 Tiffany Smith—Bob Eden Park, Trailwood Park—reported no items of concern Carroll Scott—Preserve at McCormick Park, McCormick Park- reported no items of concern Chairman Owens—West Park, Wilshire Park—reported no items of concern Chairman Owens reported on the following for April Special Events: • Saturday,April 6th—Annual Texas Trash Off—Villages of Bear Creek Park • Saturday, April 27th & Sunday, April 28th—Arbor Daze—City Hall Complex Upcoming May Special Events: • Saturday, May 18th— Movies in the Park—Villages of Bear Creek Park—dusk • Saturday, May 25th—Euless Family Life Aquatic Park—grand opening— 10:00 a.m. Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens said the May 2013 Volunteer of the Month award goes to Bear Creek Elementary School Choir members and Choir Director Travis Sampson. Our May nomination is a group that has participated in our Christmas Parade of Lights for a number of years. They are usually one of the first to respond to be a part of our event each year and have been participating since 2007. They always seem to eagerly await this event and the kids within their group always have loads of fun. Chairman Owens presented the award to Choir Director Travis Sampson, who thanked the Board Members for the award. He introduced Principal Brooke Moose, Assistant Principal Luanne Choppy and his wife Christie Sampson who is a 2nd grade teacher. III. Beautification Award of the Month Chairman Owens mentioned that each year from May through October we do a residential and business/civic/governmental Yard of the Month award. Chairman Owens said the May 2013 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Mr. and Mrs. Cartwright at 2603 Hawthorn Drive. This yard is beautifully landscaped with a variety of color plants, hanging baskets and decorative trees at the entrance to the driveway and walkway from the house. The property is well maintained and a great attraction to the neighborhood. This Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 May 6, 2013 owner takes great pride in the work that has been done in their yard. Thank you for helping to beautify Euless. Chairman Owens said since they were not in attendance tonight the plaque will be delivered to them. Chairman Owens said the May 2013 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church at 303 Cullum Drive. They have planted juniper, azaleas, liriope and a variety of shrubs along the front and the driveway entrance of the building. The property is well maintained and a great attraction to the surrounding neighborhood as well as to their congregation. It is efforts like yours that make Euless a great place to work and live. Thank you for contributing to the beautification of our city. Chairman Owens presented the plaque to Barbara Vittas who thanked the Board Members for this award. IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Carroll Scott reported on the following for April 1st—30th: Total man hours-436.00 o 187.00 Horticulture o 64.00 Forestry o 49.00 Greenhouse o 136.00 Special Projects o 0 Training • There were no trees planted and no tree related purchases V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Parks Report—Randy Smith Parks Manager Randy Smith reported on the following: • Pipeline project at McCormick Park/Preserve at McCormick Park • Thanked Board Members for their help at Arbor Daze c. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald reported on the following: • Pictures of the aquatics center construction • Arbor Daze • Summer Camp program Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. VI. Discussion of Master Plan Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald said he has compiled a list of ideas which Board Members might want to include into the Master Plan. He asked the Board Members to go through the list and rate them as to the importance of the items and decide which should or should not be incorporated into the plan and then discuss the ideas at the next meeting in June. VII. Other New Business Steve Doty thanked the Parks Department staff for all their hard work in setting up and cleaning up the Arbor Daze site at city hall. He appreciated all the work they did to help make the event a success. Chairman Owens said there was no new business for discussion. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 5 May 6, 2013 VIII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Council Member Leon Hogg reminded everyone to vote on Saturday. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Owens gave the benediction.
