HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-04-01 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board April 1,2013 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:01 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2013, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Randy Jones, Tiffany Smith and alternate Steve Doty. Members absent: Carroll Scott,John Raab and alternate Carl Miller. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Council Member Leon Hogg, Linda Lewis, Ms. Smith (Tiffany Smith's grandmother) and Loretta Doty. INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the March 4, 2013 regular meeting. Randy Jones made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Steve Doty. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports Tiffany Smith—Bob Eden Park,Trailwood Park—reported no items of concern Randy Jones—South Euless Park, Heritage Park, Reflection Park—reported no items of concern Steve Doty—J. A. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park, Villages of Bear Creek Park — reported no items of concern Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 April 1, 2013 Chairman Owens—West Park, Wilshire Park— reported no items of concern Chairman Owens reported on the following for March and April Special Events: • Monday, March 11th—Hometown Food Bank/6 Stones—had 30 volunteers • Saturday, March 23rd — Texas Junior Anglers Fishing event — Wilshire Park pond — event was cancelled due to weather • Saturday, April 6th—Annual Texas Trash Off—Villages of Bear Creek Park • Saturday, April 27th &Sunday, April 28th—Arbor Daze—City Hall Complex Steve Doty said he drove by Midway Park and the park was in good shape. Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens said the April 2013 Volunteer of the Month award goes to the First United Methodist Church Preschool. Our April nomination is a group that has participated in our Christmas Parade of Lights for a number of years. They are usually one of the first to respond to be a part of our event each year and have been participating in this event since 2007. They always seem to eagerly await this event and the kids within their group always have loads of fun. Chairman Owens presented the award to Ms. Linda Lewis, Director of Preschool, who thanked the Board Members for the award. III. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Vice Chairman Tiffany Smith reported on the following for March 1st—31St: Total man hours-676.00 o 178.00 Horticulture o 133.00 Forestry o 172.00 Greenhouse o 181.00 Special Projects o 12.00 Training • There were five (5)trees planted and five (5)tree related purchases Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 April 1, 2013 IV. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report—Suzanne Hendrickson Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson reported on the following: • New fees for the Family Life Center and new Aquatic Center (indoor and outdoor) b. Parks Report—Randy Smith Parks Manager Randy Smith reported on the following: • New landscaping at the aquatics center • Miscellaneous park projects c. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald reported on the following: • Pictures of the aquatics center construction • Contract mowing services • McCormick Park gas pipeline project Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. V. Discussion of Master Plan Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald stated he has received some comments / ideas from the Board Members but suggested tabling this item until the next meeting since John Raab and Carroll Scott are absent tonight. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 April 1, 2013 VI. Other New Business Chairman Owens mentioned this is the time when Board Members can bring up any new business or items of concern. Chairman Owens also reminded the Board Members to sign up for Arbor Daze to help in the Parks Department concession booth. VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Ms. Linda Lewis inquired about the selection process for concession booth vendors at Arbor Daze. Council Member Leon Hogg mentioned there is currently an Art Committee (which consists of three council members) and there will be an art piece which will go in at the new aquatic center.
