HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-05-13 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes May 13,2013 CALL TO ORDER Chairman, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Perry Brockmeyer, Michele Burger, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Gary Fieldsend, Betty Fuller, Bill Golden,Norma Lively,Norma Keplinger, Don Martin, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Faye Stinneford, Peggy Vandiver and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg and Linda Eilenfeldt and Mayor Mary Lib Saleh. STAFF PRESENT Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Ofa"Mary"Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services APPROVAL OF MINUTES Peggy Vandiver made a motion to approve the minutes. Don Martin seconded the motion,motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported the beginning balance on April 8, 2013 was $11,235.82. There were no expenditures; there was a$100 memorial and$12 from the donation jar. The balance as of May 13, 2013 was $11,347.82. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. There were eighteen visitors at the Mayl l open house. Iris Elliott indicated again that visitors aren't aware of the Museum's existence and location. She indicated that one of those visitors lives across the street from the Museum and she would like more advertising done about the Museum. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Arbor Daze: • Members thought the displays this year was the best in years. • Everyone thanked Barbara Collier for all her hard work. • Bill Byers and Gary Parker built the display stands and everyone thought they did a great job. • Bill Golden thanked all the members who worked at Arbor Daze. 2. Library History Room—Betty Fuller asked staff to provide all the donation/loan information for the items displayed at the Library so she can return the items to the correct owner and/or location. Staff will have to go inventory the items as staff was not made aware of which items were relocated to the Library. HPC MTG 051313 Page 1 3. Acquisition Sub-committee—Bill Byers reported that five pieces of farm equipments has been acquired for the property. In addition, Mayor Mary Lib Saleh provided medals belonging to Bill Gammen to be displayed on his Navy uniform. 4. Museum Committee—members reported the following: • Barbara Collier indicated that inventory will begin again at the Museum. • Mavy Wright will have the display sign for the Navy uniform done soon. • Members will properly display Mr. Gammen's medals on his Navy uniform. 5. Barn Display—Bill Byers and Gary Parker will work on the display soon. 6. Library Photo Display: Barbara Collier picked up the library photos from PACS and moved them to the museum. After discussing the Library Photo Display project, it was indicated that Gary Fieldsend has more time to work on the project now and he will work on some new photos for the display. 7. Scrapbook Sub-committee—Betty Fuller asked if anyone would like to help with the project. 8. Plaque Project—Barbara Collier has some names for Faye Stinneford to add to the plaque. 9. Publicity Sub-Committee—the following was discussed: • Staff provided open house signs for the members per the sub-committee's request. Iris Elliott asked that a map and each open house date be put on the signs as people won't know where to go and what dates the facilities are open. • Mayor Saleh indicated that longer historical write-ups can be included in future water bills. • Bill Byers provided information about Certified Folder Display. The company prints and distributes brochures to the surrounding area. The Committee may contact the company. • Suggested that open house flyers can be placed at the golf course. • Staff has the book marker on their list of things to do. • Open house flyers can go on a big poster on an easel at the Library. • Iris Elliott indicated that people in Euless don't know where Cullum Drive and the Museum is. • Gary Fieldsend indicated that Flickr has had several thousand hits, meaning people are looking at the photos online. 10. Euless Marker Program—The following was discussed: • The Himes Log House and Fuller House markers should be delivered in a few days. • The Himes family is having a family reunion. They would like to take a family photo at the Log House and perhaps the marker could be installed before then. • Written information for the McCormick Barn write up is being proofed by Bill Golden and Betty Fuller. A brief discussion was held regarding displaying the Barn marker. Weldon Cannon made a motion for the McCormick Barn marker to be ordered once the text is approved and for the Committee to pay for a display post like the ones already purchased for the Himes and Fuller Houses. Don Martin seconded the motion, there were no objections, motion approved. • The Committee may look into other, less expensive posts for future markers. • Regarding a local marker for the Ruth Millican Center, manuscripts need to be gathered per the local marker requirements. Staff will check with Dan Clark whether he had information about the Ruth Millican Center from previous projects that he worked on. 11. Bird's Fort Tour—Members that went on the tour enjoyed the outing. Joe and Weldon Cannon thanked the staff for their help. Everyone thanked Michele Burger for providing lunch that day. HPC MTG 051313 Page 2 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Bill Golden reported the following: • Thanked Barbara Collier for the fantastic job she has done with the inventory, Arbor Daze displays and chairing the meeting last month. Mrs. Collier does a fantastic job for the Committee. • Asked if anyone would like to chair the Evolving History Sub-committee. • Indicted that his wife's health is improving slowly. • Discussed that normally the Committee does not meet in July and August. Last year the Committee elected to meet in July and August due to the Museum grand opening deadline. After a short discussion, the Committee decided to go back to the regular schedule and will not meet in July and August. STAFF REPORTS 1. Staff reported the following: • Encouraged the members not to become discouraged about the attendance, pointed out the many hits on the Flickr account, etc. • Heidi Taylor has resigned and Suzanne Hendrickson is performing the duties of aquatics supervisor. Things have been very busy for her. • Discussed fees and gave updates about the new aquatics park. OTHER REPORTS 1. Mayor Saleh introduced newly elected Council Member Linda Eilenfeldt. Council Member Eilenfeldt expressed her appreciation to being elected to the Euless City Council and looks forward to visiting the Museum. 2. Don Martin thanked the committee on behalf of his wife, Council Member Linda Martin. Mrs. Martin won her place in the recent City Council election. 3. Council Member Leon Hogg donated a portable phone that was donated by his son Kendall Hogg. 4. Peggy Vandiver reported that one-hundred and nine people attended her birthday party. 5. Faye Stinneford thanked all the Committee for help with the election. She will pick up signs if anyone still has any. 6. Mrs. Willie Mae McCormick used to spell her husband's name as "Mc"when she wrote various papers for the City. Weldon Cannon said"Mack" is the correct spelling of the nickname of Walter Lee McCormick,husband of Willie Mae McCormick. ADJOURNMENT Peggy Vandiver made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Don Martin seconded the motion. Motion approved.
