Thanks to vaccine availability and safety precautions, our Summer Camp is returning, the Euless Family Life Aquatic Park is reopening and the Senior Center is back in the swing of things. If you haven't ever looked at the Senior Center calendar on the website, take a look when you have a chance. The number of activities they have scheduled makes my head swim. They have so many fun offerings from fitness to puzzles to crafts. I'm especially thankful for our large senior center that allows patrons plenty of room to spread out, but still be social. The Senior Center will hold some outdoor events like outdoor bingo and a walking club in the City parks. I know our staff is very excited to return to a normal schedule and familiar games and programs for our seniors. We are all looking forward to seeing our friends in person again! • Euless Turtle Walkers Winning the Race at Their own Pace It started as a simple post on the NextDoor app. Suzy Andersen wanted to go on a walk and didn't want to go by herself. What happened next was beyond her expectations. People commented that they would join her and what a great idea. Before long, a Facebook group was created. Next came a walking schedule. Then a person volunteered to pick some different parks in Euless and posted those locations along with the times. In less than a month, groups were walking throughout the week and chatting like old friends. The best part? Slow and steady wins the race. The pressure is off for a personal best time. It's more about accountability and socializing with others in a safe way. And that's how the Euless Turtle Walkers group came to be. Currently the group is around 150 people, but they would love to have more participants to give more options for days and times to walk. They welcome all ages and abilities since it is safer to walk in groups and with people of a like pace. Euless resident Dot Gardener said, "We meet around 10:00 a.m. and leave the park around 11:00 a.m. We have some that walk slower than others and some walk more than others. Some take breaks along the way and some walk after 11:00 a.m. We probably won't win any races for speed or distance, but I think we all getting a little healthier and enjoying ourselves." "A lot of us have various joint issues with our knees, backs or hips," said Vicki Vaughan. "Walking is a good way to not only move all of our joints, but also elevate our heart rate just a little bit to keep our heart pumping and strong." Lynne Moffatt has been walking with the group from the beginning and said the most gratifying part is hearing medical testimony about the walks. "One of our turtles had a doctor's appointment this past week. Her doctor told her that between the walking and the socialization that the Euless Turtle Walkers may very well have saved her life. Isn't that awesome how this group is already changing lives?" The group's founder Suzy, still can't believe how quickly the group formed and evolved. She's hoping her concept will take off in other communities. She even came up with a new motto: Turtle walkers always finish the race, but at our own pace. If you are interested in joining them, you can email eulessturtlewalkers@gmail.com. You can also find their Facebook group by searching Euless Turtle Walkers.
