HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-10-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes October 14, 2013 CALL TO ORDER Chairman, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:13 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Gary Fieldsend, Bill Golden, Norma Lively, Don Martin and Gary Parker. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Mayor Pro Tern Leon Hogg and Andy Weinzapfel. STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Norma Lively made a motion to approve the minutes. Don Martin seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported the beginning balance on September 9, 2013 was $11,062.93. There were $543.09 in expenditures and $24.90 in deposits. The balance as of October 14, 2013 was $10,544.74. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Members of the Fuller family toured the Museum Complex on October 5, 2013.There were twenty-five visitors. 2. The Boy Scouts toured the facilities on October 8, 2013. There were twenty visitors. 3. There were forty-five visitors at open house on Saturday, October 12, 2013. 4. Wilshire Elementary School will be touring on Thursday, October 17, 2013. 5. The Tarrant County Historical Commission will be touring on October 23, 2013. The following people volunteered to docent: Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Bill Byers, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Betty Fuller, Bill Golden, Don Martin and Gary Parker. Robert Nail also visited the Museum that day. 6. Emeritus Independent Living will be touring on October 29, 2013. Bill Golden, Barbara Collier Iris Elliot, Doris Brown and Perry Brockmeyer volunteered to docent. HPC MTG 101413 Page 1 7. Docents for open house on November 9, 2013 are Iris Elliott, Gary Fieldsend, Gary Parker, Doris Brown, Joe Cannon, Mayor Pro Tern Leon Hogg, Bill Golden, Norma Lively and Helen Payton. GUEST SPEAKER 1. Andy Weinzapfel is a member of the Pikes Peak Historical Society. He gave a very interesting presentation about the Pikes Peak program including various advertising techniques, donation tips and ways to increase attendance and awareness about the museum, etc. He also discussed the importance of acquiring a"hook" for the museum as well as acquiring a fact sheet for the docents and not "burning out" the committee volunteers. 2. The November guest speaker will be Richard Linnartz, President of the Historic Chisholm and Western Trails Society. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Euless Marker Program—the McCormick local marker will be shipped soon. Staff will have it installed when received. 2. Library Display—Gary Fieldsend will replace the broken frame. 3. Oral History Recording Updates—Weldon Cannon proofed Helen Gleghorn's interview and emailed it to staff for posting on the website. 4. Museum Committee—Barbara Collier asked for any member of the committee who is free and interested in helping with various projects at the museum to come by between 10 am and noon on Wednesdays. 5. Publicity Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier: • Asked members who have Facebook to share the historical Facebook page with their pages. • Asked members to continue putting up open house signs during the week of open house. • Members discussed the possibility of drilling holes and inserting pipes in the ground for metal signs to be posted in during open house. There's the concern that the pipes will continuously fill up with dirt and mud when it rains. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Asked for a directional sign or arrow to go at the sidewalk near the Fuller House north gate pointing people towards the front porch of the house. 2. Will bring a list of all sub-committees to November's meeting for the members to update. 3. Like the idea of having a"hook" as Mr. Weinzapfel mentioned in his presentation. 4. Still looking for an old wagon to be displayed on top of the stage in the museum. STAFF REPORTS 1. Staff reported the following: • The Halloween Trunk Fest event will be on October 31, 2013 at the Aquatic Center parking lot. Everyone was invited. • Work on the inventory is ongoing. HPC MTG 101413 Page 2 • Working on the historical brochure and its distribution to area hotels, etc. • Council approved security cameras for the museum. Staff will work on this in the future. • Council approved for the Playbook to be mailed out to residences again. The historical committee will have a full page in the magazine. • Working on a write up about the Museum to go on the historical webpage. • Staff will add directions / map to Heritage Park on the website. • Passed around the invitation to the Committee from the Tarrant County Historical Commission Summit to be held at the Texas Star Golf Course on Wednesday, October 23. Weldon Cannon asked for a copy of the program for the event for his files. • Discussed Heritage Park Christmas. The event will be on Saturday, December 14 between 1 and 5 pm. Docents will be needed for the event. • The Historical post cards had some final changes to it and will be ordered soon. • Noted that four historical photos from the committee's archives are displayed on the entryway at the newly remodeled Denny's Restaurant. • Congratulated Barbara Collier for being named Volunteer of the Month in September. OTHER REPORTS 1. A question was raised about the status of the Library inventory. Staff previously inventoried all items displayed in the Library and the list was given to the members. 2. Weldon Cannon noted that 100 years ago the Euless and Evatt School Districts consolidated to form a new district named Euless. The corner stone for a new building was laid in December, 1913 at the site of present South Euless Elementary School, and it was finished for opening in September, 1914. He is coordinating with Principal Randy Belcher on a small ceremony to commemorate the historic occasion, probably in October, 2014. 3. Barbara Collier reported on a write-up in the Fort Worth Genealogy Examiner about the Euless Museum open house in October which included information about the newly built post office. 4. Perry Brockmeyer discussed the annual Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering on the weekend of October 25-27, 2013. 5. Andy Weinzapfel is impressed with the increase in the number of people touring open house. 6. Any potential new committee members should submit their applications as soon as possible. 7. Mayor Pro Tern, Leon Hogg reported that a life size statue of five members of the "Kitchen Band" is in the works. The bronze statue will be displayed in front of the Senior Center. ADJOURNMENT Gary Parker made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Iris Elliott seconded the motion. Motion approved.
