HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-09-09 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes September 9, 2013 CALL TO ORDER Chairman, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Gary Barnhill, Leah Bennett, Perry Brockmeyer, Michele Burger, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Gary Fieldsend, Betty Fuller, Bill Golden, Norma Lively, Don Martin, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Faye Stinneford, Peggy Vandiver, Helen Voss and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Mayor Pro Tern Leon Hogg, Marilyn Long and Dottie West. STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, Director of Parks & Community Services Ray McDonald and Projects Coordinator Ofa"Mary" Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Peggy Vandiver made a motion to approve the minutes. Don Martin seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported the beginning balance on June 10, 2013 was $10,995.08. There were no expenditures and $67.85 in donations was deposited. The balance as of September 9, 2013 was $11,062.93. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Residents from the Parkwood Retirement Community toured the Museum on Wednesday, June 12, 2013. They donated $50. 2. The July 13, 2013 open house had about thirty visitors including the docents. 3. There were fifteen visitors during open house on August 10, 2013. 4. There were twenty-five visitors during open house on September 14, 2013. It was reported that Iris Elliott, Bill Golden, Barbara Collier, Doris Brown, Mavy Wright, David and Veva Lou Massey, Billy Byers and Norma Lively served as docents that day. HPC MTG 101413 Page 1 5. A branch of the Fuller family will be touring the Museum Complex on October 5, 2013 from 1:30- 3:30 p.m. Iris Elliott, Peggy Vandiver, David Massey, Billy Byers, Gary Parker and Norma Lively volunteered to serve as docents that day. 6. Iris Elliott, Peggy Vandiver, Bill Golden, Don Martin, Mavy Wright, David and Veva Lou Massy, Barbara Collier and Helen Payton volunteered to serve as docents during open house on October 12, 2013. GUEST SPEAKER Barbara Collier gave an informative and interesting presentation about the history of the Constitution of the United States. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Acquisition Sub-committee: • Bill Byers reported that several items were recently acquisitioned including a postal shirt, stamp box, a book, postal patches, pins and lock for a postal bag. • Barbara Collier displayed a wedding veil that was recently acquired. She reported that the wedding dress for the veil as well as photographs of the owner in the dress was also acquired for the Museum. The dress was worn in 1945.The Committee discussed possibly having a special exhibit of wedding dresses in the future. 2. Euless Marker Program—Weldon Cannon reported that the Himes Log House and McCormick Barn markers have been installed at Heritage Park. He is very happy with the location, etc. 3. Library Display—Gary Fieldsend reported that the Committee's historical display had to be moved from the front of the Library to the Genealogy—History room. He has made up a generic sign with open house information to post on the display stand. 4. Oral History Recording Updates: • Staff will post William"Bill" Gay's oral history recording online. • Weldon Cannon will briefly review Helen Gleghorn's oral history interview and staff will post the interview online. 5. Photo Album Sub-Committee—Betty Fuller needs help with the project. She asked if anyone would like to help her. 6. Museum Committee—the Committee will meet on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. 7. Publicity Sub-Committee—Mavy Wright indicated that signs are an ongoing project. She will meet with staff to work on new signs. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Bill Golden discussed the possibility of taking a tour of the "Top of the Hill" in Arlington. Members were excited about taking tours of different historical locations in the area. Mr. Golden will look into various tours. Bill Byers suggested a tour of Perot Museum. STAFF REPORTS 1. Staff reported the following: HPC MTG 101413 Page 2 • The Halloween Trunk Fest event will be on October 31, 2013 at the Aquatic Center parking lot. • Work on the inventory is ongoing. • Working on the historical brochure. • Will add a write up about the museum to the historical website. • Staff will add directions/map to Heritage Park on the website. • Staff will have various signs made up for the Committee. OTHER REPORTS 1. Weldon Cannon is in the process of selling his Euless property. He's out of town a lot and the property may look abandoned at times. Members will keep an eye on the property. 2. Betty Fuller reported that the Tarrant County Historical Commission will be touring Heritage Park on October 23, 2013. 3. Michelle Burger will pick up brochures from staff about Euless history later in the day. 4. Barbara Collier will be receiving the Volunteer of the Month award at Parks Board later in the evening. ADJOURNMENT Faye Stinneford made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Gary Parker seconded the motion. Motion approved.
