HomeMy WebLinkAbout00-1080 08-22-2000RESOLUTION NO. 00-1080 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING AUTHORITY TO ISSUE STATE BONDS FOR TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS WHEREAS, Tarrant County is a leading county in the generation of new jobs and population growth, with a strong business climate and a diverse economy; and WHEREAS, implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement is increasing the flow of goods transported on already congested Texas highways and border crossings with Mexico; and WHEREAS, the Texas Department of Transportation has estimated that current levels of funding are likely to meet less than 40 percent of the state's maintenance and construction needs over the next ten years; and WHEREAS, the Texas Legislature has an important role to play in preserving mobility and assisting all areas of the state to maintain adequate transportation funds; and WHEREAS, state bonding authority could greatly enhance the ability of local governments to ensure unmet transportation needs are addressed; and WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the Tarrant County Mayor's Council that the Texas Constitution prohibits issuing State bonds for highway projects. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EULESS, TEXAS: SECTION 1 Urges legislative authorization of a Constitutional Amendment, along with enabling legislation, to issue State bonds for road projects to the extent that State transportation funds are available to secure bond debt. SECTION 2 That copy of this resolution be forwarded to members of the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate representing Tarrant County and that a copy of this resolution also be forwarded to the Texas Municipal League requesting its support for such position. APPROVED at a regular meeting of the Euless City Council on the 22°c day of August, 2000, by a vote of 7 ayes, 0 nays, and 0 abstentions.
