HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-11-04 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board November 4,2013 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:01 P.M. on Monday, November 4, 2013, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: John Raab, Randy Jones, Carroll Scott, Tiffany Smith, Alternate Steve Doty and Alternate Carl Miller.There were no members absent. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, Athletic Coordinator Mike McMacken and Administrative Secretary Jordan Peterson. Visitors present: Gary Parker, Misty Hoffmeister, Loretta Doty, Jason Reyes, Jeremy Tompkins, Sherry Knight with the City of Euless, Janina Jewell with the City of Euless, and City Council member Leon Hogg. INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the October 7, 2013 regular meeting. Steve Doty made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Carroll Scott. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Steve Doty—J. A. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park, Villages of Bear Creek Park— Reported no items of concern b. Randy Jones—South Euless Park, Heritage Park, Reflection Park— Reported no items of concern c. John Raab — Midway Park, Blessing Branch Park, Parks at Texas Star — Reported no items of concern d. Tiffany Smith—Bob Eden Park,Trailwood Park— Reported no items of concern e. Carroll Scott — Preserve at McCormick Park, McCormick Park — Reported no items of concern f. Chairman Owens reported on the following Special Events: • October 12, Family Fitness Run —35 people attended, weather was good • October 31,Trunk or Treat—2500 people attended and 30 organizations • November 20, Senior Holiday Luncheon at 11:30 am at EFLSC • December 7, Christmas Parade of Lights at 6:30 pm—along Midway Drive • December 14, Heritage Park Christmas from 1-5 pm at Heritage Park II. Volunteer of the Month a. Chairman Owens said the November Volunteer of the Month award goes to Gary Parker. Mr. Parker has worked many hours at the museum helping to create and build the kitchen and post office display. He is also a member of the Euless Historical Preservation Committee and acts as a docent; giving tours to elementary schools and to other residents during the open hours at the museum. Recently, Mr. Parker has also become a member of the Calloway Cemetery Board of Trustees. Mr. Parker said he enjoys helping and working with the good people at the museum. IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Carroll Scott reported the following for October: a. Total man hours for October 1—October 31 -Total 705 307.00 Horticulture 203.00 Forestry 78.00 Greenhouse 101.00 Special Projects 16.00 Training 0 Tree Related Purchases 8 Trees Planted • Trimmed trees at Parks at Texas Star, Stars Center and Villages of Bear Creek. • Planted two Live Oaks, one Sycamore, and one Bald Cypress at Bob Eden Park. • Removed fallen tree limbs at Bob Eden Park. • Planted three Red Oaks and one Chitalpa at South Euless Park. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 V. Athletic Association Reports a. Parks at Texas Star—Mike McMacken • Reported on league and tournament numbers for 2013 as well as sponsorships, maintenance and scheduled events for 2014. b. Bedford/Euless Soccer Association—Misty Hoffmeister • Team registration numbers have increased since last year — with a total of 958 registered players, 514 of them are Euless resident. • 38 Scholarships were given out, and they are looking to add more next year. • Registration fees were increased minimally due to budget. • Fields always look great, but interested in getting some recycle receptacles for the fields. VI. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report—Suzanne Hendrickson • Discussed the Euless Tongan Community Committee and the organization of the recently held Diabetes Walk at the Villages of Bear Creek Park. • The EFLC will be closed on Thanksgiving but open the Friday following.The gym will be closed December 21-January 1 to resurface the floor. • The first Playbook mail out will be November 22 and include activities for December-April. • Announced the new Senior Center Recreation Specialist—Renee Garrett. b. Parks Report—Randy Smith • The park guys will be putting up the Christmas tree with new LED lights this year. • The drinking fountains at the parks will be shut off soon in order to prevent pipe freezes. • Dan Dearborn completed the Playground Safety Inspection Certification class. c. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald • The Walk of Champions plaque is finished — inductee will be Mr. Johnnie Green. Ceremony will be after the first of the year sometime. • The next Park Board meeting (December 2) will be held at the Parks Department. • Discussed the Natatorium's progress and pictures. The chairman thanked them for their reports. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 VII. Discussion of Master Plan Discussed the results of the Master Plan priority ratings each member turned in. Asked for input on the rating system for Master Plan ideas that may have received like rankings. VIII. Other New Business None IX. Input from City Council Members and Visitors None ADJOURNMENT Chairman Owens gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at 8:11 P.M.
