HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-03-10 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes March 10, 2014 CALL TO ORDER Chairman Bill Golden called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m.The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 North Ector Drive, Euless,TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Michele Burger,Joe Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Bill Golden, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, Shirley Mercer, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Faye Stinneford, Peggy Vandiver, Helen Voss, Andy Weinzapfel and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Mayor Pro Tern Leon Hogg STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Don Martin made a motion to approve the minutes. Iris Elliott seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasure Mavy Wright reported a beginning balance of$10,856.60.There were $110.46 in expenditures and $872.80 in deposits, making the ending balance $11,618.94. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Members reported that there were twenty-five visitors at open house on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Members inquired about why the water was turned off during open house? Staff will check on the status. 2. Iris Elliott, Gary Parker, Barbara Collier, Andy Weinzapfel, Don Martin,Joe Cannon, Doris Brown, Marilyn Long, Helen Payton, Peggy Vandiver and Perry Brockmeyer volunteered to serve as docents during the April open house. It was reported that a group of about twenty people from Morrisdale will tour Heritage Park during open house. SPECIAL REPORT 1. Andy Weinzapfel gave an interesting presentation on old Euless maps. He noted various changes over the years to the Euless city limits. 2. Barbara Collier discussed the need to remove the historical mural from the lobby wall and replace it with a display of maps. Should the mural project be picked up again, it can be HPC MTG 031014 Page 1 remounted back on the wall. A couple of the members thought the teacher from Trinity High School should be contacted before the project is removed. Bill Golden and various others felt no further contact was needed. After a brief discussion, Barbara Collier made a motion for the mural to be replaced with a map display. Michele Burger seconded the motion. No one opposed, motion approved. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Acquisition—The Committee recently acquired a box of items from Weldon Cannon's property. The box contained old photos and other items of possible historical significance. The box will be given to Mr. Cannon to review as some of the items may be of importance to his family's history. 2. Library Display—Bill Golden indicated that instructions were given to the Library for no one to access the historical display cases in the Library except Betty Fuller. At this time, Gary Fieldsend, Barbara Collier and Bill Golden can access the Committee's display cases in the Library. Betty Fuller's artifacts at the Library will only be accessible by Mrs. Fuller. 3. Museum Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier invited members to stop by the Museum on Wednesdays between 10 am and noon to help put photographs in frames. 4. Blacksmith Shop—Bill Golden reported that Ray McDonald gave approval for work to begin on the Blacksmith. S. Euless Marker Program: a. Staff is working on the local marker application for the Museum. Information compiled by Weldon Cannon will be used for the application. b. The Arch Cannon House and Horticulture markers will be placed in a small "park" area set aside specifically for this purpose at the Cannon property across from South Euless Elementary. 6. Publicity Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier has open house flyers at the Museum for members to pick up and post at businesses they patronize. 7. Evolving History—Michele Burger and Barbara Collier will meet to discuss various locations that needs to be photographed for the evolving history project. 8. Photo Album Sub-Committee—Marilyn Long: a. Will schedule to meet with the Sub-committee to look at what the Committee's priorities are regarding the photo albums. b. Discussed acquiring newspaper articles for the project. c. Discussed acquiring acid free supplies to use on the project. d. Staff had a copier/printer installed at the Museum several months ago so that the Committee can have copying capabilities should citizens request copies of certain documents. HPC MTG 031014 Page 2 • 9. Plaque Sub-Committee—Faye Stinneford has several names to add to the plaques and will do so at her earliest convenience. 10. Display Sub-Committee—Mavy Wright will meet with staff to work on display signs. CHAIRMANS REPORT 1. Bill Golden reported and/or discussed the following: a. Distributed the list of current Sub-Committees. He encouraged members to look on the list and volunteer or remove their names from the list as they choose. b. Asked for a volunteer to oversee the Arbor Daze display. Barbara Collier will oversee the display as she did last year. c. Would like to advertise for more local school annuals. d. Asked for suggestions on potential speakers for the monthly meetings. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff reported the following: a. Congratulated Barbara Collier on receiving Volunteer of the Year at the Board and Commission dinner. b. Security cameras will be installed at the Museum in the near future. c. The bronze statue of the Kitchen Band will be dedicated on Wednesday, April 2 at 2 p.m. d. Mayor Pro Tem Leon Hogg's retirement will be on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at the Amphitheater. e. Mayor Mary Lib Saleh's retirement will be on Friday, May 16, 2014 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at the Euless Library. COMMITTEE/OTHER REPORTS 1. Joe Cannon had a birthday on March 9. Member's wished him a happy birthday. 2. Mayor Pro Tern Leon Hogg's birthday occurred on the day of the meeting, March 10. Everyone wished him a happy birthday as well. 3. Helen Voss indicated that she may have a Curio Cabinet that would go well in the Fuller House to be used as a display case. 4. Weldon Cannon donated a lot of old dishes.They are in the process of being cleaned. Helen Voss' Curio could be used to display Mr. Cannon's dishes. 5. Peggy Vandiver's neighbor has a Marine Corp uniform. He would like to donate it to the Museum. Bill Golden indicated that Bill Byers has to be consulted for approval as a uniform was recently acquired. 6. Helen Voss noted that Nordstrom still have female mannequins they are willing to donate to the Committee. 7. Michelle Burger reported that she's been taking Euless brochures and newsletters for display at the Grapevine Railroad Station. HPC MTG 031014 Page 3 8. A thank you note from Robert Nail and his daughter, Linda Pool, was read to the members. 9. A thank you note from the First United Methodist Church of Euless was read to the members for the memorial given by the Historical Committee for Iva Nail. 10. Members discussed receiving AED/CPR training so they will know how to use the AED machine in the Museum. Staff will look into scheduling training for the members. 11. Andy Weinzapfel metal detected at the First United Methodist Church of Euless property and found a couple of interesting pieces. He shared his findings with the Committee. He dated one piece between 1912-1939 ca. Mr. Weinzapfel will make an attempt to contact the Sikh church to possibly metal detect at the corner of Cullum Drive and Airport Freeway. 12. Mayor Pro Tern Leon Hogg reported the following: a. Mentioned that the Kildares will be performing at the Villages of Bear Creek on Monday, March 10 at 7 p.m. b. He received paper work from Gary Fikes for his appointment to the Tarrant County Historical Commission. c. Invitations for his retirement will be mailed to the members. 13. Joe Cannon encouraged the preservation of the current history. He recalled several buildings, locations, etc. that are now gone forever and he wished these locations were preserved in photographs for historical purposes. ADJOURNMENT Gary Parker made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved.
