HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-02-10 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes February 10,2014 CALL TO ORDER Vice-Chairman Barbara Collier called the meeting to order at 10:01 a.m.The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 North Ector Drive, Euless,TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Bill Byers,Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Gary Fieldsend, Betty Fuller, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, David Massey, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Faye Stinneford, Andy Weinzapfel and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Mayor Pro Tem Leon Hogg,Art Sahlstein and Linda Poole. STAFF PRESENT Parks and Community Services Director Ray McDonald, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, Projects Coordinator Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale and Library Administrator Sherry Knight. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Don Martin made a motion to approve the minutes. Iris Elliott seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasure Mavy Wright reported a beginning balance of$10,918.32.There were $99.97 in expenditures and $38.25 in deposits, making the ending balance $10,856.60. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Members reported that there were four visitors during the February open house. 2. The following people volunteered to serve as docents at open house on Saturday, March 8, 2014: Iris Elliott, Faye Stinneford,Gary Parker,Andy Weinzapfel, Doris Brown,Joe Cannon, David and Veva Lou Massey, Norma Lively and Helen Payton. SPECIAL REPORT 1. Art Sahlstein shared his extensive knowledge about the Arlington Archosaur Site down at the end of South Main Street. Members were impressed with the information Mr. Sahlstein shared regarding all they have recovered from the site.The location,once known as the "river bottom" to many of the Committee members as children, was found to be filled with bones of pre-historic dinosaurs,alligators and other animals. HPC MTG 031014 Page 1 2. Library Administrator Sherry Knight discussed the following with the Committee: a. Reported that Betty Fuller's artifacts that are on display at the Library will be kept in locked display cases pending her instructions. b. Items on display belonging to the Historical Committee will be kept in separate and locked display cases pending the Committee's instructions. c. Reported that Gary Fieldsend, Barbara Collier and Bill Golden have been requested as the only members to have access to the Historical Committee's display cases. d. Expressed the Library's support of various Historical projects over the years. She hopes to continue the same relationship and support on future projects. e. She removed the Committee's photo display sign from across the checkout counters hoping to attract more readers and give the sign a better location. f. Members asked if an open house sign with dates on it can be displayed at the Library. Ms. Knight thought that would be a good idea. g. She will look into including open house information in the Library newsletter. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Acquisition—Bill Byers and others in the Committee are in the process of relocating various artifacts from Weldon Cannon's old property to Heritage Park. 2. Publicity Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier asked the members to repost and like the Historical Committee's Facebook page to help generate more publicity. Gary Fieldsend would like photos of the South Euless lands to post of Facebook. 3. Museum Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier: a. Photos are being put into frames. Many frames were purchased for the project. b. Asked members to attend the work day on Wednesday's between 10 a.m. and noon. c. Need ink cartridge for the printer. Staff will purchase new ink cartridge. d. Would like an 11 X 14 print out of the McCormick Barn write-up. Staff will work on it. 4. Euless Marker Program—Weldon Cannon submitted a folder containing the research he put together on the history of the Ruth Millican/Museum building. Mr. Cannon turned in the folder to the Committee and an application will be submitted for a local marker for the building. 5. Plaque Sub-Committee—Faye Stinneford is working on the project. 6. Display Sub-Committee—Mavy Wright noted that work is ongoing on the project. 7. Photo Album Sub-Committee—Marilyn Long will begin working on the project. Betty Fuller will remain on the Committee and Gary Fieldsend will help with the project. VICE-CHAIRMANS REPORT 1. Reported that Bill Golden couldn't attend today's meeting due to medical reasons. 2. Bill Golden is still working on compiling the Sub-Committee list. COMMITTEE/OTHER REPORTS HPC MTG 031014 Page 2 1. Betty Fuller reported on an article in the Star Telegram about Benny Tucker having purchased the old Mosier Valley School property. 2. Weldon Cannon indicated that he won't be able to come down to Euless as often as he used to. His property on South Main Street has been sold. 3. Weldon Cannon and Robert Nail commented on the Viridian land at the "river bottom" area in South Euless. Mr. Cannon noted that Euless used to run from the Trinity River all the way up to Bear Creek and the Viridian lands used to be a part of Euless. It was also noted that Euless was in the process of annexing the area when neighboring Cities heard and annexed the land before Euless was able to. Members were interested in photos of the area for the Committee's records. Art Sahlstein has photographs of the area and he will share the photos with the Committee. 4. Bill Byers reported that approval has been acquired from the City to build a Blacksmith shop at Heritage Park. 5. Andy Weinzapfel will metal detect various locations around the City including,Weldon Cannon's property across from South Euless Elementary School, First United Methodist Church of Euless and possibly the property that used to belong to James Fuller's family on the east side of South Main Street. ADJOURNMENT Gary Parker made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Mavy Wright seconded the motion. Motion approved.
