The following members were in attendance: Gayla Maas, D.V.M. Leon Hogg Michelle Watson JT Ackerman Staff Support: Larry James & Cynthia Daniel Citizen Attendance: None ITEM 2 — REVIEW AND APPROVE MINUTES FROM MEETING OF APRIL 18, 2013 Chairman Maas asked if there were any questions regarding the minutes of April 18, 2013. Chairman Maas entertained motion to accept. Leon Hogg made a motion to approve the Minutes of April 18, 2013. Michelle Watson seconded the motion. Motion approved. ITEM 3 — STAFF REPORT— SHELTER OPERATIONS Larry James reported that Animal Control Officers have over 30 hours of continuing education (CE) except Kenny Spargur who lacks 30 minutes. They have finished their CE requirements for the next four years. ITEM 4— SHELTER STATISTIC REPORT Chairman Maas noted that there was a 10-15% increase in pickups vs. same quarter last year, fewer animals returned to owners and an increase in adoptions. JT Ackerman noted that euthanasias were about the same. Animals in the shelter were up a little. Discussed reasons for feral cats being euthanized. Feral cats can carry more diseases, worms and can't keep them current on rabies vaccination. ASAB Meeting Minutes July 18, 2013 Page 2 ITEM 5 — DOG DAZE EVENT REPORT Chairman Maas reported that 92 dogs received rabies vaccination and 5 dogs were micro-chipped. She will email Larry the information for shelter records since no one was setup to take the info at Dog Daze. Attendance was down from last year. She is willing to hold another Dog Daze Event next year, but if attendance continues to drop may want to reconsider having it in the future. The Trinity High School GAP Club's fundraiser/adoption event the following weekend may be part of the reason attendance was down. Dog Daze Event offers a good service to the citizens of Euless and there are some people who have been bringing their dog for a long time. She has been participating since 1998. Put on next board meeting agenda to discuss whether to continue having the event at the Public Works facility or move it back to the Animal Shelter's outdoor area which is more visible, but does not have shade for citizens and dogs from the heat or rain. She estimates that there was a 30-33% drop this year in attendance. Discussed the micro-chip clinic portion of the event. Chairman Maas said her cost to order the chips including shipping was more than $15 each but less than $20 and that was with a discount from the AKC and a discount for working in conjunction with an animal shelter fund raiser/promotion. Michelle suggested seeing if the cost of chips would be less if the Animal Shelter ordered them instead of Dr. Maas. Michelle said the City of Keller shelter's cost for chips is $5 each. They buy three boxes at a time from Home Again. Keller charges the general public $25 for micro-chipping. Michelle explained the City of Keller's adoption fee program. The $85 adoption fee includes a spay/neutering voucher if not already altered, rabies vaccination, leukemia and FIV tested, heartworm tested, and micro-chipped. She explained that she started a new program about six weeks ago where every animal at shelter is spayed/neutered before leaving shelter if they are old enough, she has a veterinarian coming in every other week or as needed. She volunteers her time. Michelle can draw the blood for the leukemia and FIV testing, vaccinations, the heartworm testing, and micro-chipping. The Home Again micro-chipping has an annual registration renewal fee of $17.99. The Keller shelter also enters the micro-chipping information into their Shelter Pro software. The AKC chips that Dr. Maas ordered are a lifetime with no annual registration fee. Pet owner must notify if there is an address change. Discussed giving pet owners a choice between paying an impoundment fee when their animal is picked up or they can have the animal micro-chipped at a lesser fee. ITEM 6 — SHELTER FACILITY REPORT Larry tried to order the large plastic tub, but it has been on backorder for three months. Larry to find another vendor to order it from even if it costs $50 more. ASAB Meeting Minutes July 18, 2013 Page 3 JT reported that the employees from the Water Dept. installed an old fire hydrant in the outdoor dog exercise area at the shelter for the dogs. Larry reported that there aren't any repairs that need to be made to the shelter facility at this time. ITEM 7 — BOARD MEMBERS OR CITIZENS REQUESTS OF ITEMS TO BE ADDRESSED BY STAFF AND/OR PLACED ON FUTURE AGENDAS Chairman Maas asked for an update on micro-chipping program at next meeting. Chairman Maas suggested having a person and table at future Dog Daze events setup to do micro-chip services and take the registration information.
