HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity of Euless History 2003City of Euless History • Named for Elisha Adam Euless who moved to Euless in 1881 • community grew around the cotton gin he owned and good water well that was available to all • elected Tarrant County Sheriff in 1892 • first sheriff to occupy office in newly constructed county courthouse in Fort Worth • First post office was named `finless" due to the misreading in Washington, D.C. of the handwritten application • In 1930, population approx. 100 • After World War II, population approx. 300 • Incorporated in 1951 • Disincorporated in January 1953 • Reincorporated in February 1953 • In 1973 elected first woman councilperson in NE Tarrant County • Willie Mae McCormick who served until 1985 • At 93 still active in community • In 1993 elected first woman mayor in NE Tarrant County • Mary Lib Saleh • served as councilperson from 1989 to 1991 • Mayor Pro Tem 1991 to 1993 • Purchased Softball World in 1996 • Opened Texas Star Sports Complex in 1997 • Texas Star Golf Course • Texas Star Conference Centre • Parks at Texas Star • Opened Dr Pepper StarCenter in 2000 • Opened new Police & Courts facility in January 2002 • Currently celebrating 50th Anniversary • Euless Night • Performances by Trinity High School Drama Dept., Harmony Choir and HEB Elementary Honors Choir • Thursday, April 24, 7 p.m. at Arbor Daze Main Stage • Art Reception & special presentation of 50th Anniversary Publication • Honoring poster contest winners • Sunday, May 4, 2 p.m. at Euless Public Library • Dedication of Veteran's Field at Parks at Texas Star • November 2003, date TBA • Grand Re-Opening of Euless City Hall • December 2003, date TBA
