HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-08-04 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board August 4,2014 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on Monday, August 4, 2014, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other board members present: Tiffany Smith, Steve Doty, and Roger Sickler. Members absent:John Raab, Randy Jones, and Carl Miller. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, and Administrative Secretary Jordan Peterson. Visitors present: Loretta Doty, Iris Elliot & family, Kristen Cayey, Mr. Ray & Lucy Bennett, and Frances Allen. INVOCATION Chairman Owens gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the June 2, 2014 regular meeting. Mr. Doty made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Ms. Smith. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Chairman Owens reported on the following Special Events: • June 14- Movie in the Park—Up! at Leon Hogg Amphitheater—150 people • June 19—Concert in the Park—Acoustic Shade at Leon Hogg Amphitheater—35 people • July 19—Movie at the Aquatic Park—Despicable Me 2—150 people Upcoming Events • August 21—Concert in the Park—Bri Bagwell &The Washer 7 PM at TX Star Golf Course • September 13 — Concert in the Park— Graceland Ninjas & Fruitcake Superbeing 7 PM at TX Star Golf Course • September 20—TX Junior Anglers at Wilshire Pond 9 am—12 pm Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 1 II. Volunteer of the Month a. Chairman Owens announced the July 2014 Volunteer of the Month award goes to Iris Elliot. Ms. Elliot is a huge help to our Euless museum and is an active member in the historical preservation committee. She helps with special tours, special projects, attends meetings regularly and tracks visitors at museum. Ms. Elliot has been instrumental in recording artifacts and items in the museum in order to keep up with inventory and an updated list. Ms. Elliot accepted and thanked the board for the award. b. Chairman Owens also recognized Kristen Cayey as the August 2014 volunteer of the month. Ms. Cayey is always willing to help with various special events for the city. She has helped with Heritage Park Christmas, Movies in the Park, and many others. She is dependable and always happy to give back to her community. Ms. Cayey thanked the board for the award. Ill. Beautification Award of the Month a. Chairman Owens announced that the July 2014 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Jaqueline Szymczack at 413 Anice Lane. This yard has multiple shrubs including the Nandina, Texas Sage, and Burford Holly. In addition other plants include: Fringe flower, Knockout roses, Indian Hawthorne, and Wandering Jew plant. Ms. Szymczack was not present to accept the award. b. Chairman Owens announced the July 2014 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to Village Green of Bear Creek at 1800 Fuller-Wiser. Complete with Marigold plants, colorful Vinca plants, Salvia blue queen shrub, and a Spiral Point Juniper shrub. They also have a bloomed Crape Myrtle combined with the Liriope grass.Village Green of Bear Creek was not present to accept the award. c. The August 2014 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Mr. Ray and Lucy Bennett of 207 Valley Ct. With multiple flower beds encompassing Lantanas, Knockout Roses, Dwarf Nandinas, Japenese Yew and Bronze Leaf Begonia. Not only flower beds, but also a very large Live Oak tree, and Crape Myrtle. Mr. & Mrs. Bennett thanked the board for the award. d. The August 2014 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to Super Value at 720 N. Industrial Blvd. The many shrubs Dwarf Nandina and Burford Holly are always neatly clipped. The colorful addition of Boston fern and Bronze Leaf Begonia's combined with some Liriope Grass and a few Crape Myrtle. Ms. Frances Allen thanked the board for the award. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Tiffany Smith reported the following for July&August: a. Total man hours for June 1-30=687 hours • 375.00 Horticulture • 164.00 Forestry • 148.00 Greenhouse • 00.00 Special Projects • 00.00 Training ➢ Trimmed trees at Blessing Branch Park. ➢ Trimmed trees at Park at Texas Star. ➢ Cleared storm damage in Parks. ➢ Assisted Public Works on tree work around the city. ➢ Planted a Bald Cypress at Wilshire Park. b. Total man hours for July 1-31 =582 hours • 249.00 Horticulture • 245.00 Forestry • 72.00 Greenhouse • 00.00 Special Projects • 16.00 Training ➢ Removed trees at Heritage Park for parking lot construction. ➢ Removed Bradford Pear tree at Midway Park. ➢ Trimmed along Fuller-Wiser sidewalks and Main St. Bridge. ➢ Trimmed trees at Preserve, West Park Way Drive & Marlene Drive. V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report—Suzanne Hendrickson • Recreation memberships are still steadily increasing. • Aquatic numbers are steady, and looking at adding additional swim lesson classes. • Parks Department will celebrate Arbor Daze on November 7th at the green house. b. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald • South Euless Pool is closed until further notice. • Glade Park Trail Application pictures and update. • TxDot Green Ribbon Grant application—one funded. Chairman Owens thanked them for their reports. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 VII. Other New Business September meeting will be Monday, September 8, 2014 due to Labor Day. VIII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors No input from City Council or visitors. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Owens gave the benediction.
