HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-05-12 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes May 12,2014 CALL TO ORDER Chairman Bill Golden called the meeting to order at 10:06 a.m.The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 North Ector Drive, Euless,TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Michele Burger, Bill Byers,Joe Cannon,Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Bill Golden, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, Helen Payton, Peggy Vandiver and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Mayor Pro Tem Leon Hogg and Patty Benoit STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Under Status of Current Projects; Item#3, Section b: it should say the marker application was worked on by Weldon Cannon and Norma Lively jointly.Also under Current Projects; Item #6, Bill Golden spoke with the Mayor regarding loaning/borrowing exhibits,Weldon Cannon did not. Peggy Vandiver made a motion to approve the minutes with the corrections. Perry Brockmeyer seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer Mavy Wright reported a beginning balance of$11,213.74.There were$296 in expenditures and $249 in deposits, making the ending balance$11,166.74. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. The following was discussed regarding Arbor Daze: a. The following people signed up to serve as docents during Arbor Daze on Saturday,April 26 and 27, 2014:Shirley Mercer, Doris Brown, Gary Parker, Bill Byers,Norma Lively, Gary Fieldsend, Dan Burger, Michele Burger, Marilyn Long,Faye Stinneford, Bill Byers, Helen Voss,Andy Weinzapfel, Bill Golden, Michele Burger,Joe Cannon, Barbara Collier, Helen Payton and Mavy Wright. b. Kids were very intrigued with the artifacts on display, especially the old phone and the process of dialing the phone. c. Everyone who worked was thanked for serving. Bill Golden thanked Barbara Collier for overseeing the set up,displays, etc. HPC MTG 060914 Page 1 d. Barbara Collier spoke with Sherry Knight, Library Administrator, during the event and Ms. Knight indicated that the historical display is prominently displayed in the history section of the Library. 2. The following was discussed regarding open house on Saturday, May 10, 2014: a. Bill Byers, Gary Parker, Marilyn Long, David and Veva Lou Massey, Gary Fieldsend, Peggy Vandiver, Norma Lively, Doris Brown, Dan Burger, Michele Burger and Perry Brockmeyer signed up to serve as docents during open house. b. There were approximately twenty-five visitors. Bill Golden indicated that the Advertising Committee has been doing a good job promoting open house. c. Bill Golden thanked all the docents for all their help. It was recalled that at some point in the past, it was near impossible to get docents to volunteer. d. A few visitors asked to look at the school albums.They might have been looking for a parent or grandparent. 3. The following people volunteered to serve as docents during open house on Saturday,June 14, 2014: Bill Byers, Bill Golden, Barbara Collier, Don Martin, Peggy Vandiver, Helen Payton, Norma Lively, Mavy Wright and Perry Brockmeyer. 4. It was indicated that the June open house date falls on Flag Day.After a brief discussion, it was decided that staff will provide small US flags for the members to display at the Museum and to hand out to the visitors that day. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Acquisition Sub-Committee—Bill Byers reported that Lynne Melson has a few items to donate to the Museum. 2. Museum Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier noted that the framing project is still ongoing. Mavy works on the signs for the photos and they work every Wednesday, between 10 am to noon. If any committee member is free to help, he or she is welcome to stop by. Mrs. Collier asked if there was a better day for the rest of the members to hold their work day. 3. Euless Marker Program—Weldon Cannon reported that Sandra Crowley with First Baptist Church of Euless indicated that a Texas state historical marker for the church may be in the works. Mr. Cannon encouraged all the church members in the historical committee to encourage and express support of the project. Mr. Cannon is very interested in a marker for the church as it is a big part of Euless history. 4. Publicity Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier discussed the following: a. Has been busy and haven't been able to put out open house flyers at local businesses. She encouraged the members to pick up open house flyers from the Museum and display them at local business. b. Asked members to click "like" and "share" on the Euless Historical Preservation Committee Facebook page to help spread the word to the public. HPC MTG 060914 Page 2 li c. Michele Burger reported that the Grapevine Visitors Bureau has moved Euless' information towards to front of their display. Mrs. Burger tries to drop the Mayor's Newsletter and other Euless advertisements to Grapevine on a monthly basis. d. Norma Lively suggested members take the open house flyers and hand them out at group gatherings and board game gatherings, etc. 5. Oral History/Photography Sub-Committee—Bill Golden reported that Gary Fieldsend is doing a great job maintaining this area. 6. Evolving History—Members asked about photographs of the new building project going up between Churches Chicken and the Albertson gas station on Harwood Road. Michele Burger indicated she'll look into photographing the site. She was able to photograph the old skating rink on South Euless Main Street. 7. Scrap Booking Sub-Committee—Marilyn Long discussed the following: a. A work day has been scheduled for the second Monday in August, 2014. b. Will touch base with Betty Fuller just to keep her updated. c. Asked Bill Golden about the arrangement with Cane's Chicken to provide lunch. Mr. Golden will make the arrangements. 8. Plaque Sub-Committee—Mr. Nail had stopped by the Museum to see Iva Nail's Memorial Plaque. Members were encouraged to give their memorials/honorariums to Mavy Wright to record and process. CHAIRMANS REPORT 1. Bill Golden reported and/or discussed the following: a. Gave a reminder that the Committee does not meet in July and August. b. Has a list of the years needed in order to make a complete set of the school annuals. Staff will add the list to the next issue of the Play Book. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff reported the following: a. Will provide Euless Today brochures to the Museum to hand out. b. Tim Rolen retired after twenty-three years, Brandon Foley has replaced him. c. Hired Tiffany Martinez as part time Clerk and she'll be helping with various historical projects. d. The Mayor's reception will be on Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Euless Library between 3:30 pm and 7 pm. Everyone is invited. COMMITTEE/OTHER REPORTS 1. Don Martin thanked everyone who helped with Linda Martin's election. She won the election handily and everyone offered congratulations for the new Euless Mayor. 2. Weldon Cannon has several projects he's been working on that are approximately 90% completed. One of them is a paper about Tarrant.Andy Weinzapfel has been steadily inquiring after the piece and Mr. Cannon will give Mr. Weinzapfel a final copy of the paper HPC MTG 060914 Page 3 soon. Bill Golden would like a copy for the Museum and the City would like an electronic copy of the piece for the records. It was suggested that lateral files for the pieces be kept at the Library. 3. Patty Benoit indicated that there's a Texas Historical Commission grant that could help pay for markers, depending on the subject matter. It doesn't hurt to apply and Ms. Benoit has been successful in applying for these grants in her work.The Commission is especially interested in honoring racial/minority types of grants. 4. Barbara Collier noted that the Committee does not meet in July and August. She indicated that the Work Day committee will also take a break, although, she'll still be at the Museum working on various projects on Wednesdays. If anyone is free and would like to help out, he or she is welcome to attend. 5. Weldon Cannon shared a funny story about the Tarrant sign being stored at Heritage Park. Mr. Cannon made the sign himself and he and Betty Fuller went to the Tarrant Train Depot area on exactly,the 100th year anniversary to the day, of when the first train came through and while Mr. Cannon stood holding the sign, Betty Fuller snapped his photo as the THE passed behind him. Everyone thought the story amusing. 6. Peggy Vandiver is a member of the Fire Alumni Association. She gave a reminder from the Fire Department for people to put a white towel on their bedroom windows to help Fire Fighters identify bedrooms at night in case of a fire. ADJOURNMENT Don Martin made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Peggy Vandiver seconded the motion. Motion approved.
