HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-08-07 TEEN COURT ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES MEETING OF AUGUST 7, 2014 STATE OF TEXAS § COUNTY OF TARRANT § CITY OF BEDFORD § The Teen Court Advisory Board of the cities of Hurst, Euless and Bedford, Texas met at 6:00 p.m. at Bedford City Hall on the 7th day of August 2014, with the following members present: HURST: Phoebe Soward EULESS: Renu Sloan, Warren Wilson BEDFORD: Jeanne Owers, Kathleen Toms TEEN REPRESENTATIVES: Hurst Council Liaison –Anna Holzer Bedford Council Liaison — Steve Farco Euless Council Liaison – HEB Teen Court Coordinator– Mindy Eichorst HEB Teen Court Assistant Coordinator– Also present: Hurst Deputy City Secretary–Cynthia Singleton Euless Staff Liaison –Teresa Alexander Bedford Court Manager– Hurst Court Manager– HEB Teen Court Clerk- Bedford Administrative Services Director- CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Phoebe Soward called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. with a quorum of five Board Members present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Consider approval of the following Teen Court Advisory Board minutes: a) March 6, 2014 regular meeting. Minutes of the March 6, 2014 Regular Board Meeting were reviewed. Kathleen Toms made a motion to accept the minutes and Renu Sloan seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. 2. Introductions Steve Farco, Bedford Councilperson liaison and Cynthia Singleton, Hurst Deputy City Secretary, attended for Rita Frick, City Secretary. OLD BUSINESS 3. Discuss ideas for fundraisers. Secretary Kathleen Toms mentioned that Marco's Pizza in Bedford has a different manager and district manager every time she tries to talk with them. Chairperson Phoebe Soward mentioned Chick-Fil-A and their fundraisers and the locations of the restaurants two in Hurst and one in Euless. Kathleen Toms mentioned they are a good fundraiser and could possibly give 20 (Y0 back to the group for one day. It was suggested to talk with Steve and Debbie Vincent, franchise owners of one of the restaurants. Bedford Council Liaison, Steve Farco, suggested a bowl-a-thon at Showplace Lanes in Euless. Vice Chairperson Warren Wilson advised he would check into this opportunity. There was a discussion of involving the teen volunteers with the fundraisers and Ms. Soward offered to attend a teen court and talk with the teen volunteers and get their opinions of fundraisers and their involvement of assisting the Advisory Board. 4. Discuss and possibly take action on items as they relate to the 2014 annual Teen Court Banquet. Vice-Chairperson Warren Wilson contacted Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst about getting comparisons of profits from the Teen Court Scholarship Banquets for the past couple of years. A chart with the years of 2011 through 2014 was presented to all Advisory Board Members and then to all present at the meeting. After comparing the results of the past 4 years, a discussion of how to recognize the volunteer teens was brought up. Mr. Wilson suggested a presentation in front of peers in a courtroom while Ms. Soward suggested a more efficient way but making it a personal recognition. Ms. Soward then asked if this topic could be added to the next agenda to discuss further. 5. Discuss and possibly take action on a sponsorship/information flier for Advisory Board Members. A flier to include sponsorship and donation options was something the Advisory Board Members wanted to still work on. Kathleen Toms made a motion to have a sponsorship/information flier and Warren Wilson seconded the motion. This was a unanimous vote. NEW BUSINESS 6. Discuss the overview of HEB Teen Court Program including the following: a) Volunteers b) Defendants c) Discipline Grid d) Community Service Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst discussed the overview of Teen Court. She mentioned she is always looking for both adult and teen volunteers. A few suggestions of contacts were Lisa Karr at HEB ISD Tech School and also Nancy Shane, L.D. Bell International Baccalaureate Coordinator. 7. Discuss and possibly take action on a teen liaison application. Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst handed each Advisory Board Member a copy of the teen liaison application for Dakota Ridgway. After some discussion, Advisory Board Member Renu Sloan made a motion to have Dakota Ridgway as a Teen Liaison representing Trinity High School and Jeanne Owers seconded the motion. This was a unanimous vote by all Advisory Board Members. 8. Discuss and possibly take action on items as they relate to the 2015 annual Teen Court Banquet. A continuation from the earlier discussion about the 2014 annual Teen Court Banquet, Chairperson Phoebe Soward mentioned an event, whatever it may be, needs to be organized in a timely fashion. Advisory Board Member Jeanne Owers mentioned she liked the idea of a reception in a courtroom instead of a banquet. Advisory Board Member Renu Sloan challenged all of the Advisory Board Members to bring at least one contact to the next meeting. 9. Set the date for the next Teen Court Advisory Board Meeting. The next HEB Teen Court meeting will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bedford City Hall upstairs conference room, 2000 Forest Ridge Drive. REPORTS Mindy Eichorst presented the Coordinator's Report and Financial Report for the months of March, April, May, June, and July 2014. ADJOURNMENT Warren Wilson entered a motion for the meeting to be adjourned. Renu Sloan seconded the motion and all voted in favor. The meeting was adjourned at 7:34 p.m. r Phoebe Soward, Chairperson
