HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-10-06 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board October 6,2014 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 pm on Monday, October 6, 2014, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Vice Chairman John Raab. Other Board Members present: chairman Eric Owens, Tiffany Smith, Carl Miller,Steve Doty, and Roger Sickler. Members absent: Randy Jones. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, and Administrative Secretary Jordan Peterson. Visitors present: Loretta Doty, Tac Quay Sam, Crystal Gaikoski, John & BJ Prior, O.D. & Norma Lively. INVOCATION Roger Sickler gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the September 8, 2014 regular meeting. Mr. Raab made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Mr. Miller. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Steve Doty—Midway Park& Blessing Branch: No items to report. b. Randy Jones—Bob Eden &Trailwood: Not present. c. John Raab—Villages of Bear Creek& Reflection: No items to report. d. Tiffany Smith—Kiddie Carr&J.A. Carr: No items to report. e. Carl Miller—Heritage &S. Euless: No items to report. f. Roger Sickler-West Park&Wilshire: No items to report. g. Chairman Owens—Parks at Texas Star: No items to report. h. Chairman Owens reported on the following Special Events: • September 13—Fruitcake Superbeing &Graceland Ninjas at Tx Star—150 ppl • September 20—Jr Anglers Fishing Event—150 people and over 50 fishes caught • October 4—Stars Over Euless at Bob Eden Park Upcoming • October 31—Trunk or Treat at EFLAP Parking lot 5:30 pm—8:30 pm • December 6—Christmas Parade of Lights on Midway 6:30 pm • December 15—Heritage Park Christmas at 1-5 pm Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 1 II. Volunteer of the Month a. Chairman Owens announced the October 2014 Volunteer of the Month award goes to Norma Lively. She not only volunteers her time but also her knowledge and history with the City of Euless. Mrs. Lively serves as a docent during open house at the museum and helps educate people on the history of Euless. She helps with inventory, item displays, and special events at the museum. In addition to that, she also serves on the Historical Preservation Committee. Mrs. Lively graciously accepted her award and thanked the board. III. Beautification Award of the Month a. Chairman Owens announced the October 2014 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to John & BJ Prior at 311 Park Meadow Drive. With the Dwarf Mexican Petunia, Mandevilla plant, Nandina, Indian Hawthorn, and Vinca plants. They've also incorporated Bald Cypress and Crape Myrtle to finish the overall look. John & BJ are new to Euless, and thanked the board for their award. b. Chairman Owens announced the October 2014 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to Tall Timber Apartment at 501 Sycamore Lane. With variety of plants including Nellie R. Stevens and Burford Holly, purple Fountain Grass,Vinca, Coleus and Indian Hawthorn.They also have Crape Myrtles throughout the property. Ms. Gaikoski the assistant manager accepted and thanked the board on behalf of Tall Timbers Apartment. IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Tiffany Smith reported the following for September 2014: a. Total man hours for September=428 • 122.00 Horticulture • 212.00 Forestry • 91.00 Greenhouse • 3.00 Special Projects • 0.00 Training o Trimmed trees at McCormick entrance. o Removed limbs at Trailwood Park and Bob Eden. o Trimmed trees and bushes at Fire Station #1 o Trimmed items at Pauline Greenhouse for new construction o Removed stumps in various parks. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report—Suzanne Hendrickson • Fall classes and indoor pool are staying consistent. • Senior Center has added new instructors and seen an increase in participation. • Facilities have also been consistently busy. • Greek Orthodox Church festival begins Friday 10/10-Sunday 10/12. b. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald • New projects this fiscal year: Reported on upcoming projects approved for FY 2015. • Projects from 2014: Reported on carry-over projects from FY 2014. • Dr Pepper StarCenter update. Chairman Owens thanked them for their reports. VI. Other New Business No new comments. VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors No input from visitors.
