HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-10-13 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes October 13, 2014 CALL TO ORDER Chairman Bill Golden called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Gary Barnhill, Perry Brockmeyer, Doris Brown, Michele Burger, Bill Byers,Joe Cannon, Barbara Collier, Bill Golden, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Faye Stinneford,Andy Weinzapfel, Mavy Wright and Leon Hogg. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Jane Njuguna and Mary Lib Saleh STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bill Byers made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Andy Weinzapfel seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT A treasurer report will be provided at the next meeting. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. There were approximately thirty-four people at the September open house. 2. There were over one-hundred and thirty people at the October open house. The idea of extending open house hours in October due to the Greek Festival was mentioned. 3. Several people on the Committee volunteered to serve as docents during open house on Saturday, November 8, 2014. 4. The following people will serve as docents during the Midway Park Elementary School tour on Tuesday, October 22, 2014: Mavy Wright, Leon Hogg, Barbara Collier, Bill Byers, Gary Parker and Doris Brown. 5. The following people will serve as docents during the Spring Garden Elementary School tour on Wednesday, October 23, 2014: Barbara Collier, Leon Hogg, Mavy Wright, Bill Byers and Doris Brown. HPC MTG 111014 Page 1 STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Acquisition Sub-Committee—Bill Byers reported that a piano was recently acquired and it's in the Music Room. Inside the piano bench were many items. Barbara Collier indicated that the items will be catalogued before they are entered into the inventory. 2. Library Display/Website—no report. 3. Museum Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier reported the following: • Thanked Gary Parker for adding the display shelves at the Museum. • The Usselton photos that were reported lost at last month's meeting were found in the trunk in the Military Room. 4. Euless Marker Program—No report. 5. Publicity Sub-Committee—No report. 6. Plaque Project—Mavy Wright and Faye Stinneford will coordinate to have some names added to the plaques. 7. Display Signs—work is ongoing and coordinated between Mavy Wright and staff. Three signs were recently put up. • 8. Library History/Genealogy Room—No report. 9. Oral History/Photography Sub-Committee—Bill Byers proofed his oral history. His transcribed interview will be posted on the history webpage in the near future. 10. Evolving History—Michele Burger has photographs of the old Rebecca location. Previously, this was the old skating rink location. 11. Scrap Booking Sub-Committee—Work is ongoing and Marilyn Long will call a meeting soon. 12. Artifact Recover Sub-Committee—Andy Weinzapfel reported: • The Heritage Room at the Tarrant County College and The Portal to Texas History website, etc. are rich in local historical information for anyone who might be interested. • Would like to provide a short training session for members who are interested in helping with the metal detecting project. • Displayed a photo of a Bowie Knife brought in by a visitor to open house. She found the knife in her Euless property and wanted to show it to the Committee. • Suggested that lighter material t-shirts identifying members on official committee work would be a good idea. • Expressed interest in metal detecting the Sikh Temple site on Cullum Drive and Highway 10. Mary Lib Saleh suggested that Mr. Weinzapfel could contact Mike Collins with the HPC MTG 111014 Page 2 r City of Euless to help communicate with the owners for permission to metal detect on the property. • Bill Golden suggested that the property where the old Whitener Log House once stood would be a great location to metal detect. CHAIRMANS REPORT 1. Bill Golden reported/discussed the following: a. Weldon Cannon couldn't attend today's meeting. b. The history mural for the Museum is currently being worked on by Carolyn Allen and the Trinity High School art students. It was first thought that the project was dissolved, however, Helen Voss recently made contact with Ms. Allen and the project is moving forward. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff reported the following: a. Displayed a photo of a piece of pottery that had Euless, Texas stamped on the bottom. The Committee briefly discussed the company that the pottery might have come from. b. A monitor for the Committee's computer will be acquired and installed. c. A curator has looked at Robert Nail's stamp collection and staff will update the Committee regarding cost, display, etc. COMMITTEE/OTHER REPORTS 1. The Committee would like to acquire lighter material work shirts in addition to their long sleeve denim shirts. Staff will work with the Committee to acquire said shirts. 2. It was discussed that the thermostat in the Museum needs to be moved for a display the Committee would like to put up. Staff will have the thermostat moved. 3. Some members discussed/reported the following issues/concerns: • Items have been disappearing from the Museum. • Alarm system has been found unset. • There have been several occasions where doors were found unlocked. • Some of the members asked about people with access to the Museum. • Bill Byers' ladder from the Lumber Yard disappeared a while back. • Recently another ladder also disappeared from the Museum. • Gary Parker reported that the recent paint job of the Fuller House was poorly done. Staff will see about correcting the problem. • Leon Hogg explained there were paint spots on the floor and he was worried that paint might have gotten on the bedroom set that he donated. • Staff noted that security cameras will be installed in the Museum in the near future. This will help minimize the issues reported by the Committee. • Staff installed locks on the closet door in the Kitchen/Storage area for the Committee to store various items in. • Helen Payton discussed some possible ways of fixing the wallpaper in the Fuller House without redoing the whole house. HPC MTG 111014 Page 3 • Staff will post their personal contact information at the Museum for the Committee to , communicate with staff each time the facility is found unsecured, etc. Staff can try and help determine who was last in the facility. • The Committee indicated their need to enlarge their storage space and move some of the walls inside the Museum. They would be able to do the work themselves. Staff indicated that permission maybe required before this could be done. • Andy Weinzapfel felt that the cracks in the walls and some of the wallpaper issues at the Fuller House added to the historical character of the house. • Doris Brown mentioned that visitors often attempts to climb up to the loft in the Log House. 4. Faye Stinneford reported that the Euless Citizens Police Academy is holding their annual fundraiser on November 8, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Euless Family Life Senior Center if anyone would like to purchase tickets. 5. Euless historical photos are displayed at the new Pot Belly restaurant in north Euless. 6. Marilyn Long reported that Iris Elliott had fallen. She is improving but has had a difficult time due to her fall. The Members expressed their relief that Mrs. Elliott is recovering. ADJOURNMENT Don Martin made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Barbara Collier seconded the motion. Motion approved.
