HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-12-08 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes December 8, 2014 CALL TO ORDER Chairman Bill Golden called the meeting to order at 10:06 a.m. The meeting was held at the Texas Star Golf Course, at 1400 Texas Star Parkway, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Andy Weinzapfel, Barbara Collier, Bill Byers, Bill Golden, David Massey, Don Martin, Doris Brown, Faye Stinneford, Gary Fieldsend, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Helen Voss, Iris Elliott, Joe Cannon, Leon Hogg, Marilyn Long, Mavy Wright, Michele Burger, Norma Lively, Perry Brockmeyer, Robert Nail, Shirley Mercer, Veva Lou Massey and Weldon Cannon. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Jane Njuguna, Keith Jernigan, Janell Haggart and Donna Moore. STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa "Mary" Faiva- Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Gary Parker made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Andy Weinzapfel seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer Mavy Wright reported a current balance of $11,712.47. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. A Christian private school from Irving toured Heritage Park on November 20, 2014. 2. The following people volunteered to serve as docents at the December 13, 2014 open house: Marilyn Long, Barbara Collier, Don Martin, Mary Lib Saleh, Norma Lively, Shirley Mercer, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Mavy Wright, Helen Payton, Doris Brown, Bill Golden, Perry Brockmeyer, Joe Cannon, Andy Weinzapfel, Gary Fieldsend and Leon Hogg. 3. Stonegate Elementary School will be touring the facilities on January 6, 2015. Barbara Collier, Doris Brown, Leon Hogg, Bill Byers, Gary Parker, Mavy Wright and Perry Brockmeyer volunteered to serve as docents at the event. 4. The following people volunteered to serve as docents at the January 10, 2015 open house: Andy Weinzapfel, Leon Hogg, Bill Byers, Gary Parker, David Massey, Veva IIPC M'I'G 011215 Page 1 Lou Massey, Doris Brown, Norma Lively, Helen Payton, Mavy Wright and Perry Brockmeyer. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Acquisition Sub-Committee—Bill Byers reported that an old wheel from Weldon Cannon's property was acquired. 2. Library Display/Website—no report. 3. Museum Sub-Committee—Barbara Collier reminded everyone of the work day on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 to get the facility ready for open house. a. Bill Golden noted that the mural is being worked on but it won't be ready for display until January, 2015. 4. Marker Program—Weldon Cannon reported the following: a. Intends to submit a proposal for a marker for Ross Cannon's house / location. b. Discussed the idea for a Texas State Historical Marker for "Early Education in Euless" to go on the Sikh location. Mr. Cannon has all the information on the subject and will share them with Andy Weinzapfel for future use. 5. Publicity Sub-Committee—the following was discussed: a. Bill Golden wants to meet with Betsy Deck to see about advertising. b. Barbara Collier reminded everyone to put out their open house signs this week. c. Flyers for open house will be given to everyone on Wednesday for display at local business locations, etc. 6. Plaque Project—Faye Stinneford and Mavy Wright worked on the plaque and it's up to date. 7. Display Signs—Name plates for some of the Veterans in the Military Room need to be put up. Mavy Wright will work on signage for the School Room. 8. Library History/Genealogy Room—No report. 9. Oral History / Photography Sub-Committee—No report. 10.Evolving History—No report. 11.Scrap Booking Sub-Committee—Marilyn Long and the Sub-committee met and work has begun on the scrap books. She thanked Bill Byers and key members for helping with identification of people and locations. 12.Artifact Recovery Sub-Committee—Andy Weinzapfel reported on the following: a. Is interested in metal detecting on Dr. Rhodes' old property. He will approach the current owners for permission to work on the property. b. Is fairly sure of the location of the 1914 first Euless School location on the Sikh property. He is also looking forward to doing more metal detecting on the IIPC MTG 011215 Page 2 property. Noted that the Sikh owners are good to work with regarding access to the property. CHAIRMANS REPORT 1. Bill Golden thanked the staff and the Committee for working with him over the last few years as the Chairman. He enjoyed his tenure and wished Barbara Collier and Mavy Wright well as the future Chairman and Vice-chairman, concurrently. He will continue to work with Committee. 2. Barbara Collier handed out the current list of Sub-committees for the members to review and update their involvement. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff thanked Bill Golden for his services as Chairman. They thanked and wished all the members happy holidays. COMMITTEE I OTHER REPORTS 1. Members thanked Bill Golden for his services as Chairman and extended their congratulations and well wishes to Barbara Collier and Mavy Wright in their new positions. 2. Robert Nail gave a reminder about the Pearl Harbor attack which happened 73 years ago. He reminisced about the day he heard the news on the radio. A few of the members can recall the day as well. 3. New member Donna Moore was introduced to the Committee. 4. Barbara Collier would like to add clean up of Dobkins Cemetery to the Committee's projects for 2015. Seven members of the Dobkins family are buried at the cemetery and it's located inside DFW Airport property. There's also a Texas State Historical Marker on site. ADJOURNMENT Gary Fieldsend made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Joe Cannon seconded the motion, motion approved.
