We would not be able to host our great events, run meetings or even bring smiles to as many faces without them. They volunteer their time without asking for anything in return. The City of Euless honors volunteers each year to celebrate the dedication and service of these outstanding people. Volunteer of the Year Mavy Wright Volunteer Youth of the Year Daniel Thomas Daniel volunteered his time by cleaning up parks throughout our great City. One park and one weekend of cleaning turned into three parks over several weekends and five different clean up days. Daniel provided his own supplies and gathered up several bags of trash and recycling in our parks, along trails and creek banks, in playgrounds and around pavilions, while making sure to keep the Parks Department informed of what was collected. Mavy Wright is this year's recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award. Her family roots run deep within the City, and this is why she is so passionate and dedicated in serving our Euless community. She has been a volunteer with the Historical Preservation Committee since 2008 and began serving on the Library Board in 2019. When given a mission, she is steadfast, no matter what obstacles get in her way. She never turns down a project and often seeks out opportunities to volunteer her time, wisdom, and knowledge. She is always on the run and her energy can out last everyone else. There is a short list of individuals who would do anything when it comes to volunteering and she is one of them, a true testament to how fantastic she really is. Volunteer Group of the Year CERT During the COVID-19 pandemic, six members of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) donated over 167 hours of their time to help the vaccination site in Hurst run smoothly. They assisted in various support roles such as filling out paperwork, directing traffic, and handling other logistical items that allowed professional staff members to provide a large number of vaccines daily. Those members included Barbara Brown, Kenneth Jackson, Jim Pope Jr, Thomas Salmi, Diana Williams, and Crystal Winer. These individuals and CERT are recognized as the Organization of the Year. Lifetime Achievement Award John and Carmen Deithloff John and Carmen Deithloff exemplify what it means to be a dedicated volunteer. In addition to serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission, John served on the Zoning Board of Adjustments, the Economic Development Advisory Board, the Senior Advisory Task Force, and is currently serving as a member of the Civil Service Commission. Carmen was appointed to serve as a member of the Euless Development Corporation in 1999 and continues to serve to this very day. They are both graduates and alumni members of the Euless Citizens Police and Fire Academies, and John served as a member of CERT and a member of the Euless Amateur Radio Club. Volunteer Business of the Year Lucas Funeral Home This business has some of the most dedicated servants of any business in the metroplex. Tragedy struck when Officer Alex Cervantes lost his life in a motor vehicle accident. All it took was one phone call to Jimmy Lucas, and he and his staff worked tirelessly to make sure the Euless family was taken care of. They ask for no recognition or acknowledgment, they just want to be good partners with the community. Jimmy and all the staff at Lucas Funeral Home are the epitome of what it means to be a servant to their fellow man. HEB Reads!
