HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-03-09 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes March 9, 2020 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Suzy McCormick called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was held at the Euless City Hall, Euless. She extended a welcome to the attendees. MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown,Al Browning, Bill Byers,Joe Cannon, Barbara Collier, Gary Fieldsend,James Fuller, Mary Hunt, Norma Lively, Suzy McCormick,Anniece McKanna, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Linda Pool, Faye Stinneford, Peggy Vandiver,Andy Weinzapfel, and Mavy Wright. STAFF PRESENT Parks and Community Services Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale and Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald. VISITORS PRESENT None APPROVAL OF MINUTES James Fuller made a motion to accept the minutes, and Faye Stinneford seconded the motion. With unanimous approval, Ms. McCormick stated the motion carried. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer Mavy Wright advised that the balance from February was $11,838.51. There was a deposit of$1,634 for the Robert Nail plaque, resulting in an ending balance of $13,472.51. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docents and Volunteer Report/Recruitment—Linda Pool circulated the volunteer signup sheet for the April Heritage Park Open House. She expressed appreciation to the volunteers. 2. Acquisition—Mr. Byers had no report. 3. Facebook—Mrs. Pool stated Facebook posts are still receiving many views and shares. In addition, she presented a photo of Billy Fuller (brother of Iva Fuller Nail) to Ms. Wright for the Honor Wall at the Museum. A former member of the First United Methodist Church (Eugene Robertson) donated a 1969 postal scale to the Nail Family HPC MTG 03092020 Page 1 of 3 which had been used at the Euless Post Office. It was determined there was already a postal scale on display in the museum. 4. Plaque—Faye Stinneford indicated the Nail Memorial Plaque is awaiting engraving. More donations are being received. 5. Display Signs—Mavy Wright stated display signs were ready for placement. 6. Publicity/Program/Speakers—Mavy Wright had no report. 7. Historical Albums—No report since Marilyn Long was absent. 8. Heritage Park—Gary Parker said he had received a quote of$1600 each for three cabinets for the museum. The cabinets would be of the same constructions as the current ones (wood, glass, and locks). A motion was made by Barbara Collier to proceed with the purchase of three cabinets to be constructed by Glenn Barton using HPC funds and Gary Parker will oversee the project. The motion was seconded by Andy Weinzapfel. The members, excluding Al Browning and Michele Burger, supported the purchase. Motion carried, and Mr. McDonald will assist with the purchase. 9. Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel had lunch with Benny Tucker from Mosier Valley and expressed a desire to meet with members of the Mosier Valley Community for their input regarding the aerial photo received from David Allen, Euless GIS Manager. Mr.Weinzapfel also mentioned the activity of the Mosier Valley Freemasons. Many headstones at the cemetery referenced the Masons. He discovered there is a Freemason Museum (Prince Hall Library Museum) in Fort Worth and a docent who would be willing to speak to HPC. Historically,the Black Freemasons met in local churches and determined there is a connection with Mosier Valley. Mr.Weinzapfel indicated he had found a Ferris Reds brick while doing metal detecting. A group discussion ensued about the history of the Ferris Reds company and if there would be an interest in placing the brick and details in the museum. 10. Historical Tree Program—Mr.Weinzapfel shared there is an oak tree at the Trigg Cotton Gin location that is no longer producing. He requested the City obtain a cutting for propagation. 11. Inventory—no report. HPC MTG 03092020 Page 2 of 3 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT - No report STAFF REPORT Mr. McDonald indicated a crew would handle the cutting of the oak tree. He further invited everyone to attend the Carr Park rededication and ribbon cutting on April 4 and also to the Arbor Daze event on April 25. COMMITTEE REPORT/INPUT 1. Mr. Browning inquired as to the status of the Blacksmith Shop which was tabled at the February meeting. It was determined the City has not completed their analysis as far as the future of the structure (repairs, improvements, and displays). 2. Faye Stinneford advised that the Fire Department Steak Dinner will take place on March 21, 2020 at Fire Station 3. Tickets are still available, and Outback Steakhouse will be catering the meal. ADJOURNMENT Andy Weinzapfel made a motion to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Faye Stinneford.
