Three children reading books

PROPOSAL FOR THE EULESS LIBRARY SCULPTURE
Three children, approximate ages 5, 10 and 15 years, are reading their
books while laying outside on a quilt. Each is in a characteristic pose for
his age. The 5-year-old is balanced on her knees in a typical child-like
pose. The 10-year-old is daydreaming about what she has just read. The
15-year-old is studying in a casual, relaxed position.
On a frieze around the bottom edge of the base of the piece, characters
flow from one book to the next (the books extend over the edges). Under
the 5-year-old's book, generic characters and symbols representing
childrens books like Winnie the Pooh, Dr. Seuss, etc. are sculpted in low
relief. Under the 10-year-old, the characters and symbols of her
interests are represented, while the 15-year-old is reading the classics
and research material with appropriate figures sculpted in the frieze
under his book.
The base is of concrete and the bronze is mounted to the top surface with
bolts into the concrete. Dark gray granite slabs are laminated to the side
surfaces of the base to complement the library structure. The entire
sculpture and base stand approximately-6 1 /2 fee tall with the frieze
being about 3 feet tall, just the right height for small children to be able
to enjoy the characters and symbols in relief. The children in the
sculpture are 1 1 /4times lifesize. These children, at this size, would be
approximately 4'3", 6', and 7'2".
All elements of this sculpture will be gently highlighted to give the
piece depth and then the sculpture is to be treated with a sealer for
protection from the elements. The bronze and granite materials are very
low maintenance and would weather gracefully over time. In the design
of this sculpture, no small pieces offer opportunity for vandalism. The
reliefs on the base around the piece would always be highpolished
because it is reachable by little children and their hands would be
continually stroking the symbols.
This sculpture is interesting from all angles and carries the theme of a
lifetime of enjoyment from books. There are no static areas as it is
viewed from 360 degrees. The quilt has flowing folds that carry a
genuine old pattern throughout uniting the pieces and representing the
older generations who have lain the foundation for learning.
The foundry proposal is based on bids from:
Schaefer Art Bronze Casting in Arlington, Texas. This foundry was able
to offer us the best price for the services. In addition, the owner is a
structural engineer and can offer his expertise on base construction as
part of the overall job. They are close so that the delivery charges are
very reasonable and the danger of damage to the finished piece in
delivery is minimal.
