HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-06-08 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes June 8, 2015 CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman, Barbara Collier, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 N. Ector Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Iris Elliott, Mary Lib Saleh, Mavy Wright, Leon Hogg, Doris Brown, Barbara Collier, Maryilyn Long, Andy Weinzapfel, Norma Lively, Helen Payton, Don Martin, Veva Lou Massey, Helen Voss, Gary Parker, David Massey, Gary Fieldsend, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon and Weldon Cannon. STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa Mary Faiva- Siale APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bill Byers made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Doris Brown seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $11,863.60. There was a deposit of $20.06. The current balance is $11,883.66. NEW BUSINESS 1. Barbara Collier discussed the need for quorum in order to be able to hold the meeting. It was discussed that perhaps "inactive" members who have not attended meetings in a very long time should be removed from the Committee. Some felt perhaps they should be assigned to a different membership category. Mary Lib Saleh will research the subject and discuss it with the Committee. 2. Perry Brockmeyer's Passing a. The Committee would like to acquire a book for the Mary Lib Saleh Library in memorial of Mr. Brockmeyer. Veva Lou Massey made a motion to acquire a book about "cowboys" or the Stock Yard in the approximate amount of up to $50. Gary Parker seconded the motion. No one opposed, motion carried. 3. Mural Project a. The artist, Lisa McNamara, returned the "art book" and she also completed the additional work needed on the mural. An index for the Mural will be done soon. HPC MTG 091415 Page 1 STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports / Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. Volunteers for next the next three to four months were signed up. 2. Acquisitions—Bill Byers a. Weldon Cannon donated a piece a mail postmarked Euless, April 26, 1953. It's a fair assumption that Robert Nail stamped the piece of mail himself. b. Leon Hogg may have a pair of military shoes to donate for one of the displays in the Military Room. 3. Library Display \Website \ Facebook a. Leon Hogg returned all of Betty Fuller's items that were displayed in the Library. a. Barbara Collier decided to save the 2015 Arbor Daze posters until next year's Arbor Daze rather than putting them out at the Library this year. Marilyn Long is the Co- chair to Bill Golden. She with Helen Payton, Mary Lib Saleh and Norma Lively will decide on a rotating display for the Library. Helen Voss volunteered to help with the project. 4. Heritage Park—Gary Parker a. Reported that the Museum has been found unsecured three different times. 5. Local Historical Marker—Weldon Cannon a. Working on a Ross Cannon House marker application. 6. Publicity—Barbara Collier a. Gave a reminder for members to put out their Open House signs. b. Bill Byers will check with the Bank about advertising the Museum open house on their digital sign. c. Will contact Betsy Deck regarding advertising open house on the digital sign on the Euless Methodist Church property. 7. Plaque—Faye Stinneford a. No report. 8. Display Signs—Mavy Wright a. The sign for the School Room has been put up. 9. Oral History \ Photography—Gary Fieldsend a. Weldon Cannon is being interviewed after the meeting. His interview will be done in phases to ensure each subject is done thoroughly and correctly. 10.Historical Albums—Marilyn Long a. No report. HPC MTG 091415 Page 2 11.Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel a. The Sikh property leaders are supportive of the Committee and their projects. 12.Texas State Historical marker Application—Weldon Cannon a. Andy Weinzapfel received Weldon Cannon's paperwork for the "Early Euless School" marker. b. Gary Fieldsend posted a list of all the Texas State Historical markers in Euless online. He also included photos of each marker plus their locations. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Barbara Collier is a member of DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and the UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy.) The Dobkins Cemetery inside DFW Airport property has less than 10 graves on it and there's a Confederate soldier buried onsite. Mrs. Collier has been able to acquire a key and access to the Cemetery to clean the gravestones and do maintenance work on the property. Mrs. Collier discussed the idea of the Historical Committee helping out with the project with Bill Golden and Gary Parker. Gary Fieldsend would like to help with the project and perhaps Andy Weinzapfel could metal detect the site. Further details will be provided on the project. STAFF REPORT 1. Reported that Ray McDonald spoke with the Moore's, the family that used to own all the property where Sotogrande Apartments are located. Certain members reminisced about the family that owned the properties. The Committee was very interested in speaking with them and Weldon Cannon will contact the family. 2. Reported that the Historical brochures have been done and a distribution company has been contracted to distribute the brochures to many locations across Texas including all six Texas Travel Centers. COMMITTEE / OTHER REPORTS 1. The Committee asked for the marque in front of the Museum to be cleaned. 2. Leon Hogg noted that work on the Calloway Cemetery is going well. The cemetery has a website, members can go to callowaycemetery.com for information. They are considering a cremation site on property. 3. Leon Hogg also reported that James Fuller has improved a great deal and is possibly back to work. 4. Helen Payton reported that an acquaintance of Mr. Payton spoke at their church on the topic of "Remembering Euless Churches". She asked if the Committee was interested in having him as a speaker and the Committee expressed great interest. Mrs. Payton will confirm with Mr. Payton and the speaker and let the Committee know. 5. Mary Lib Saleh also mentioned that owners of the foundry that did a lot of the statues and a few of the historical markers for the City of Euless may also be good speakers. HPC MTG 091415 Page 3 6. A brief discussion was held regarding the whereabouts of the granite marker that was at the shop on South Main Street and Calloway Cemetery Road. No one seemed to know where the marker is located currently? ADJOURNMENT David Massey made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Norma Lively seconded the motion. Motion approved.
