HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-08-03 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board August 3, 2015 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2015, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other board members present: Randy Jones, Tiffany Smith, Steve Doty, Roger Sickler, Salman Bhojani. Members absent: John Raab, and Jason Reyes. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Manager Terry Boaz, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, Graphic Artist Jeff Towne and Administrative Secretary Jordan Peterson. Visitors present: Loretta Doty, Rocio Becerra, Michael Eftimie and Council Member Jeremy Tompkins. INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the June 5, 2015 regular meeting. Mr. Sickler made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Mr. Jones. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Steve Doty— Heritage Park & S. Euless— No items to report. b. Randy Jones— Preserve & McCormick Park— Missing irrigation cover at Preserve. c. John Raab —West Park & Wilshire— Not Present. d. Tiffany Smith —Villages of Bear Creek & Reflection — No items to report. e. Roger Sickler- Kiddie Carr &J.A. Carr— Carr Park creek needs clearing. f. Jason Reyes— Midway Park & Blessing Branch - Not Present. g. Salman Bhojani — Bob Eden Park & Trailwood — No items to report. h. Chairman Owens— Parks at Texas Star— No items to report. i. Volunteer of the Month a. Chairman Owens announced the July 2015 Volunteer of the Month award goes to Rocio Becerra. Ms. Becerra is a huge at our special events. She has been volunteering for over two years with different events. Recently, Ms. Becerra was instrumental in organizing the Out of School Bash. She provided leadership to the other volunteers and gave our staff a chance to attend to other things. Ms. Becerra accepted and thanked the board for the award. b. Chairman Owens also recognized Kayla Holsomback as the August 2015 volunteer of the month. Ms. Holsomback has ensured that her company Texas Roadhouse is an involved participant in the cities special events. Ms. Holsomback wasn't able to attend the meeting, her award will be delivered to her. III. Beautification Award of the Month a. Chairman Owens announced that the July 2015 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Judy Timmersman at 1010 Crane Drive. This landscape has a variety of specimen plants that are drought tolerant. Including, Burford Holly, Liriope Grass, Annual Begonia, and a Mulberry tree. The aged trees provide shade and a natural look for overall quality. Ms. Timmerman's award will be delivered to her. b. Chairman Owens announced the July 2015 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church at 303 Cullum Drive. The wide variety of different plant material compliments this building perfectly. The landscape offers plant species including Vitex tree, Spiral Point Juniper, Texas Sage, Knock Out Roses, Rose of Sharon, and many other native plants. Mr. Mike Eftimie was present to accept the award. c. The August 2015 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Mary Gilpin at 1104 DeeDee Creek. This landscape has Annual Begonia, Knockout Roses, Rosemary, and an array of hanging baskets. It is obvious Ms. Gilpin spends a good amount of time ensuring her yard is in great condition. Ms. Gilpin's award will be delivered to her. d. The August 2015 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to Legend Health & Rehabilitation at 900 Westpark Way. This landscape displays a well-manicured lawn, and complimented with an assortment of plants. It offers a showing of Roses, Yaupon Hollies, Crape Myrtle, and large Cedar Elm trees. The award will be delivered to Legend Health & Rehabilitation. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Tiffany Smith reported the following for July & August: a. Total man hours for June 1-30 =402 hours • 156.00 Horticulture • 158.00 Forestry • 84.00 Greenhouse • 00.00 Special Projects • 4.50 Training • Cut fallen tree off of trail at Villages of Bear Creek. • Removed several fallen trees at J. A. Carr Park and Trailw000d Park. ➢ Cleared storm damage in Parks. ➢ Sprayed for Bag worms on Bear Creek Parkway. ➢ Worked with HEB Summer youth work program at Pauline St. greenhouse. b. Total man hours for July 1-31 = 475 hours • 217.00 Horticulture • 172.00 Forestry • 62.00 Greenhouse • 7.00 Special Projects • 17.50 Training ➢ Removed dead Mesquite tree and trimmed dead limbs over trail at Midway Park. ➢ Trimmed tree limbs at West Park entrance. ➢ Removed two dead Pines at The Parks at Texas Star. ➢ Cleared drainage alleyway off of Milam Dr. ➢ Removed trees at the intersection of Hwy 10 and Ector Dr. ➢ Removed dead Ash tree at Heritage Park. V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Staff Report—Jeff Towne, Graphic Artist • Overview of history with the city and current job duties. b. Recreation Report—Suzanne Hendrickson • Wilshire pool closes August 19. Summer Camp will finish on August 14. • The new fall Playbook has been delivered. • Recreation Department is upgrading software the week of August 24. c. Community Services Report— Ray McDonald • Julia Waekely's induction into the Walk of Champions was August 1. • Green Ribbon Project bid has been awarded — project should start early fall. • Working on Glade Parks funding agreement with TXDOT. Chairman Owens thanked them for their reports. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 VI. Other New Business September meeting will be Monday, September 14, 2015 due to Labor Day. VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors No input from City Council or visitors. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Owens gave the benediction.
