HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-09-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes September 14, 2015 CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman, Barbara Collier, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 N. Ector Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Barbara Collier, Doris Brown, Iris Elliott, Mavy Wright, Bill Golden, David Massey, Faye Stinneford, Mary Lib Saleh, Andy Weinzapfel, Norma Lively, Gary Parker, Don Martin, Gary Fieldsend, Weldon Cannon, Marilyn Long, Leon Hogg, Helen Payton and Michele Burger. STAFF PRESENT Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services, Recreation Manager, Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator, Ofa Mary Faiva-Siale APPROVAL OF MINUTES Don Martin made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Marilyn Long seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $11,883.66. There was a deposit of$11 from the donation boxes, $34 from the donation jar, plus another$12.55 and an additional $150 in memorials for Perry Brookmeyer. The current balance is $12,091.21. NEW BUSINESS 1. PowerPoint presentation about chalkboards with writings from 1917 that were found at Emerson High School in Oklahoma City. 2. A handout with guidelines and procedures was passed out. It is to be used when special requests from the public are received for use of Heritage Park for photo sessions, etc. Some members weren't inclined to open the facility for certain requests. After some discussion, Parks and Community Services will take over the scheduling and handling of these requests. 3. Special Exhibits a. Marie Maines painted the Cannon Tractor and her paintings are on display at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center in Fort Worth. She could be asked to display her exhibit at the Museum. HPC MTG 101215 Page 1 b. A history teacher who specializes in the Revolutionary War could be asked to do a presentation. c. Michael Patterson has a fascinating presentation on Civil War Veterans buried at Bear Creek Cemetery. Perhaps he could give a presentation. d. Have a band play outside Heritage Park with hot dogs, etc. An old time band called The Buttermilk Band could be invited to perform. e. Mike Brown could sing. f. Have an "Educational Talk" once a month. g. Invite Bill Deacon to give his presentation on "Remembering Euless Churches." h. Special events and exhibits could be publicized to draw a large audience. 4. The current Sub-committee list was passed around for the members to update. 5. Joe Shaffer will be the guest speaker in October. 6. Weldon Cannon will speak on the "Philosophy of Euless History" in November. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports / Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. There were five people at open house in July. b. 16 people signed in at open house in September. c. Docents signed up to work open house on Saturday, October 10, 2015. d. Heritage Park will be open during the Greek Festival event on October 16-18, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. e. Bill Golden would like to have open house twice a month. 2. Acquisitions—Gary Parker a. Reported that someone would like to loan child's 1950 toy tractor with trailer. There was a stipulation on how the item should be displayed. b. Leon Hogg mentioned that Kendall has a sewing machine he would like to loan to the Museum. c. The Acquisition Sub-committee will decide whether to accept the items or not. 3. Library Display—Marilyn Long a. They will work on a new display at the Library on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. b. Open house hours could be posted somewhere in the Genealogy/ History Room. c. Staff noted that they need to be informed what is taken and/or removed from the Library so the inventory can be updated. 4. Website 1 Facebook—Bill Golden a. Missing some Annuals from certain years from various schools. b. School Libraries will be contacted to see if they have Annuals to donate to the collection. HPC MTG 101215 Page 2 5. Heritage Park—Gary Parker a. Completed the closet to lock the Annuals in. b. Still working on the Blacksmith Shop. c. Inquired if there was significance to the old Church of Christ building that's on the Mural. Weldon Cannon did historical research on the subject. The building is the first Church of Christ building ever built in Euless. 6. Local Historical Marker—Weldon Cannon a. The Horticultural Marker has been re-set on the property across from South Euless Elementary. b. The Arch Cannon marker is still at Heritage Park. It will be displayed beside the Horticulture Marker. c. Working on a Ross Cannon House Marker to also be posted next to the Horticulture Marker. 7. Publicity—Barbara Collier a. The brochures are working great. Various people reported they've seen the brochures at visitor's centers, hotels, etc. b. Michele Burger reported that the brochures aren't displayed at certain locations and she will take some to those locations. c. Still waiting to hear back from Betsy Deck about the Digital Sign. d. The Committee will participate and hand out brochures at the Trunk or Treat event on October 31, 2015 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. 8. Plaque—Faye Stinneford a. Will hold off on turning in names for the Memorial Plaque in case anyone else would like to turn in memorials for Perry Brockmeyer. 9. Display Signs—Mavy Wright a. Will be getting with staff to finalize a few more signs. 10.Oral History 1 Photography—Gary Fieldsend a. Completed Part 1 of Weldon Cannon's oral history interview. A second one will be done in the near future. b. Mr. Fieldsend would welcome anyone who would like to join the Sub-committee. 11.Historical Albums—Marilyn Long a. No report. 12.Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel a. Will go out to the Sikh sight to metal detect in the near future. HPC MTG 101215 Page 3 13.Texas State Historical marker Application—Andy Weinzapfel a. Submitted the "Pioneer Schools" application to the Tarrant County Historical Commission. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Had some unsigned donation forms that were given to the members to sign. 2. Would like to start rearranging the Museum to give it a new look. STAFF REPORT 1. The Texana Living History Association will be onsite at Heritage Park and they will dress in period costume and doing various period demonstrations. They will be inside the Log House and porch. 2. A new sign is on order to replace the marquee sign at Heritage Park. COMMITTEE I OTHER REPORTS 1. Mary Lib Saleh indicated that a change will be made to the Committee's bylaw to only require 11 members to be present in order to have a quorum. 2. The Committee would be interested in taking a tour of the Log Houses in Arlington. Bill Golden will find out the details and report back to the Committee. 3. Members discussed what a great help Perry Brookmeyer had been to the Committee. Attempts to mail his family a letter have been unsuccessful. 4. If anyone is interested in purchasing tickets for the annual Fire Fighter Alumni BBQ Dinner fundraising on October 24 may contact Faye Stinneford. ADJOURNMENT Gary Parker made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Andy Weinzapfel seconded the motion. Motion approved.
