HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-05-04EULESS PUBLIC LIBRARY MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY BOARD THURSDAY, MAY 4, 2023 ITEM NO. 1 CALLED TO ORDER A meeting of the Euless Library Board began at 7:10 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2023, in the Conference Room of the Library, 201 N. Ector Drive. Those present included: Board Members Barney Snitz, Chris McAllister, and Rochelle Ragas. Chairperson Jorge Chac, Vice Chairperson Katherine Flannery, and Board Members Mavy Wright and Jim Hamilton were not present. As there was not a quorum, Library Director Sherry Knight held an informational meeting for those in attendance. STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT Sherry Knight, Library Director Angela Jones, Assistant Library Director Laney James, Administrative Secretary Daniella Tillman, Library Aide VISITORS LuAnn Portugal, Euless, Texas ITEM NO.2 APPROVED LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES Mr. Snitz noted the spelling of the term "iftar" from last month's minutes and asked if there was a correction to be made. Ms. Knight confirmed the spelling was correct and explained that the "iftar" was the breaking of the Ramadan fast she had attended. ITEM NO.3 WELCOMED VISITORS ITEM NO.4 PRESENTED LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT Staff Update Ms. Knight gave an update on the latest staff changes including the promotion of Daniella Tillman as a new full-time Library Aide. Ms. Tillman gave an update on her new responsibilities. Ms. Tillman is learning to write reports as well as making a staff manual for some of the library's software, Koha. Mr. McAllister asked Ms. Tillman how long she has been working here so Ms. Tillman said she started in 2021 and explained how much she enjoys working here. Ms. Knight asked Ms. Tillman to show off her new vest and everyone provided positive feedback on its appearance. ❖ Library Update Library Board Minutes, Thursday, May 4, 2023, Page 1 of 2 Library Board Minutes, Thursday, May 4, 2023, Page 2 of 2 Ms. Knight reviewed the latest statistical summaries and Stories of Impact as well as gave an update on the Bubble Wall and acquisition of a replacement pump. Ms. Knight spoke about the popularity of programs such as the AARP Tax Help, Family Place Workshops, and Toddler Time. ❖ Classes and Events Update Ms. Knight gave an overview of upcoming classes and events, including the HEB Reads kickoff event, Read to Me, Waggin' Tales, Silent Book Club, a special Schools Out Hang Out, and free computer classes. Ms. Knight invited the board to attend any events that they would like and reminded everyone of the library's upcoming closure on Memorial Day. Ms. Ragas asked how the Waggin' Tales events have been and Ms. Jones expressed that attendance is lower on days with poor weather but that they have fun. Ms. Jones explained these events are a good way for the library to connect with the city's Parks Department. Ms. Jones spoke about a craft that attendees of the special SOHO event will be able to make- a pocket -sized solar system. Mr. McAllister asked about the possibility of a partnership with Arts Council Northeast Masterworks so Ms. Knight explained that the city has determined those events are best held at Texas Star and the library is more suited for smaller performances. The cost of the events was not justifiable due to a lack of patron attendance. Ms. Portugal recommended the Trinity Show Choir and Ms. Knight recalled the Mayor's Holiday Kickoff performance held at City Hall. Ms. Jones gave a short presentation for our upcoming summer reading program, HEB Reads. Ms. Jones explained to the board the partnership between local public libraries and the HEB Independent School District and spoke about the events to be hosted throughout the summer. Mr. McAllister asked about the amount of reading needed for the different prizes so Ms. Jones went through the different participation levels and associated rewards. ITEM NO. 5 REPORTS ❖ Library Board Chairperson ❖ Library Board Vice Chairperson ❖ Library Board Members ITEM NO. 6 PUBLIC COMMENTS Ms. Portugal commended the library on their social media presence, specifically complimenting the regularity of the Facebook posts. Ms. Portugal provided an update on the progress of the local Walk-On's, the HomeGoods store opening, and Bed Bath & Beyond and Tuesday Morning closing.
