HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-09 Euless Today2023*S Dear Citizens, Over the summer, our Finance department, in conjunction with the City Manager's Office, worked diligently j to provide City Council with a proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year which begins October 1st. We look forward to sharing the details of the final approved budget in the November edition of Euless Today. I am proud to announce that the City of Euless has received the Distinguished Budget Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada again this year. This is the 32nd consecutive year that the City has received this honor. This award was established in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments in preparing budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgets as well as GFOA's Best Practices on Budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal. To earn this recognition, budget documents must meet program criteria and excel as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communication tool. Recently, we were pleased that Euless' budget document was mentioned in a GFOA training session as an example of an excellent budget document that could be used as an example for other cities to follow. I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to Janina Jewell, Director of Finance and the entire Finance Department staff that works tirelessly to ensure the continued financial strength of the City. Code RE DM Helping Older Adults Prepare for a Disaster September is National Preparedness Month and this year's campaign focuses on preparing older adults for disaster, specifically older folks from communities that are disproportionally impacted by the all -hazard events, such as severe weather. To alert people in the direct path of severe weather, the City of Euless has implemented the CodeRED Weather Warning system, an automated weather warning technology that delivers phone calls, text messages and emails to registered residents and businesses. The CodeRED Weather Warning system is an opt -in service that automatically notifies those enrolled of tornado, flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings. "We know older adults can face greater risks when it comes to the multitude of extreme weather events and emergencies we now face, especially if they are living alone, are low-income, have a disability or live in rural areas," says FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell. "Through our Ready Campaign, FEMA is evolving the way we engage with communities to be more inclusive and impactful than ever before, which includes meeting older adults where they are and getting them the preparedness resources they need and deserve." According to the American Red Cross, some of the factors that make older adults more vulnerable to disasters are: • They are more likely to suffer from chronic conditions • They are dependent on medications associated with chronic conditions • They have a greater reliance on assistive devices such as walkers or glasses • They have a greater reliance on support from caregivers and others • They have an increased likelihood of social isolation Criswell urges all those who work with and support older adult communities to access the new webpage available in English, Spanish and other languages at Ready.gov/older-adults for more information and graphics. Older adults may have specific needs after a disaster. Determine what your needs are and account for them in your emergency plan: • Know what disasters can affect your area, which of them might result in an evacuation or a shelter in place, and plan what you need to do in both cases. • Keep a NOAA Weather Radio tuned to your local emergency station and monitor TV and radio for warnings about severe weather in your area. • Download the FEMA or CodeRED app on your smart phone and get weather alerts. • Determine any special assistance you may need and include plans for that assistance in your emergency plan. • Plan for food, water and essentials for you and pets or service animals. • Plan for your transportation if you need help evacuating. • Include items that meet your individual needs, such as medicines, medical supplies, batteries and chargers, in your emergency supply kit. • Plan how you will have your assistive devices with you during an evacuation. • Make copies of Medicaid, Medicare and other insurance cards. To download the FEMA app or for more information, such as how to make a disaster plan and what to pack in an emergency kit, go to the website: Ready.gov/older-adults. To sign-up for CodeRED, text the word EULESS to 99411 from your mobile phone, or go to the CodeRed page at the City's website: eulesstx.gov.
