HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-05-01Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board May 01, 2023 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 p.m.. On Monday, May, 01, 2023, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Steve Doty. Other Board Members present: Isha Sharma, Roger Sickler and Jason Reyes. Members absent: Chairman Randy Jones, John Raab, Magen Brown and Kay Seger. Staff members present: Assistant City Manager Wes Rhodes, Director of Parks and Community Services Duane Strawn, Recreation Manager Elizabeth Johnson, Senior Center Supervisor Sonja Howard, Recreation Center Supervisor Alex Harvey, Parks Manager Daniel Dearborn, Parks Superintendent Ryan Turner and Administrative Secretary Jodie Dunn. Visitors present: Council Member Jeremy Tompkins INVOCATION Roger Sickler gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Steve Doty asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the April 03, 2023 regular meeting. Roger Sickler made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Jason Reyes. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Magen Brown — Preserve & McCormick: Not present. b. Steve Doty — West Park & Wilshire: No items to report. c. John Raab — Reflection & VOBC: Not present. d. Roger Sickler — Bob Eden & Trailwood: No items to report. e. Jason Reyes — Midway & Blessing Branch: No items to report. f. Kay Seger—J.A.Carr & Kiddie Carr: Not present. g. Isha Sharma — Heritage & S. Euless: No items to report. h. Chairman Jones — Parks at Texas Star: Not present. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 1 II. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Jason Reyes reported the following for April 15Y- 30tn, 2023: a. Total man hours for April 1st — 30tn = 742 • 285 Horticulture • 214 Forestry • 170 Greenhouse • 41 Special Projects • 32 Training • Trimmed shrubs at Heritage Park, Westpark Way ROW, Midway Park, Main St Medians, The Preserve, Animal Control, and Fuller House • Turned on all water fountains. Replaced fountains at The Preserve and McCormick Park, Bob Eden Trail and VOBC. • Stump grinded at Westpark and Mid Cities medians • Removed dead pine trees, crape myrtle, and desert willow on Mid Cities • Removed dead trees at West McCormick, EFLC, and J.A. Carr Park • Trimmed trees at Midway, PD, West McCormick, and J.A. Carr Park • Began color change out in all beds • Planted six trees at Fire Station 1 III. Parks and Communitv Services Reports a. Recreation Report — Elizabeth Johnson • The Senior Center had an Easter egg hunt in the ballroom and also held a Health Fair where insurance agencies were brought in. Free items were given and the Health Fair went over really well with the seniors. • Kite over Euless was held on April 15, 2023. The event was held at Villages of Bear Creek. 100-150 Kites were given away. 4 Arbor Daze was held on April 29, 2023 at Midway Park. The event was a hit with the citizens and many compliments were given by citizens as well as City management. • The Aquatic Park had concrete work done under the cabanas. The concrete was re - textured and painted which brightened them up. • Pre -season training will start the week of May 8cn • The tiles were taken off of the Pickleball courts and the concrete was repaired. b. Parks Report — Daniel Dearborn • One -gallon trees were given away at Arbor Daze. Over 900 trees were given away. • Trees and Shrubs were planted at Fire Station #1. Multiple hours of work and prep work were done to get this project complete. • Lakewood Tennis Courts were re -surfaced and painted. There are numerous dead trees around the city and the Parks department is working diligently to get those taken care of. • A bike repair station was installed on the trail at Blessing Branch. • A new outhouse was built and installed at the Heritage Museum. The outhouse was made from a White Oak tree that was taken down in Euless. Steve Doty thanked the staff for their reports. IV. Other New Business Wes Rhodes introduced Duane Strawn to the Park Board as the new Parks and Community Service Director. Duane Strawn retired from the City of Grand Prairie and started with Euless on May 01, 2023. V. Input from Citv Council Members and Visitors Council member Jeremy Tompkins wanted to thank Shawn and Loretta Getchell for bringing a trailer full of pellets to help with the standing water on the fields for Arbor Daze.
