HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-10-05EULESS PUBLIC LIBRARY MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY BOARD THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2023 ITEM NO. 1 CALLED TO ORDER A regular meeting of the Euless Library Board was called to order by Chairperson Jorge Chac at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2023, in the Meeting Room of the library, at 201 N. Ector Drive. Those present included: Chairperson Chac, Vice Chairperson Katherine Flannery, Board Members Barney Snitz, and Jim Hamilton. Board Members Rochelle Ragas and Chris McAllister were not present. STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT Sherry Knight, Library Director Angela Jones, Assistant Library Director Kelsea Ciavaglia, Senior Librarian & Processes Department Supervisor Laney James, Administrative Secretary Susan Gillies, Library Aide VISITORS LuAnn Portugal ITEM NO. 2 APPROVED LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES Chairperson Chac asked for a motion to accept the minutes of the regular meeting held on September 7, 2023. The motion was made by Mr. Snitz and seconded by Vice Chairperson Flannery. All were in favor and the motion carried. ITEM NO.3 WELCOMED VISITORS Chairperson Chac welcomed all visitors. ITEM NO. 4 PRESENTED LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT Staff Update Ms. Knight gave an update on the latest staff changes including the hiring of Susan Gillies as a new full-time Library Aide. Ms. Gillies introduced herself and gave an overview of her personal and professional background. Ms. Ciavaglia spoke about how Ms. Gillies has gotten familiar with the team and what a wonderful addition she has made to the processes team. Ms. Ciavaglia described her department's role and regular duties and provided the board with an update on the library's growing collection with the recent addition of a teen horror section. The board welcomed Ms. Gillies. Ms. Portugal asked for Ms. Gillies' opinion of the library and Ms. Gillies described it as open and welcoming. •'+ Library Update Ms. Knight reviewed the latest statistical summaries and Stories of Impact, including one online review of the library. Library Board Minutes, Thursday, October 5, Page 1 of 2 Library Board Minutes, Thursday, October 5, Page 2 of 2 Chairperson Chac inquired about the constitution of the Adult Education programs and Ms. Knight explained that it includes the E.S.L. classes, citizenship classes, and computer classes. Ms. Knight informed the board of current advisory board and commission vacancies in the city of Euless and asked the board to consider sharing this information with their family and friends. ❖ Classes and Events Update Ms. Jones gave an overview of upcoming classes and events including a new program: Cuentos con Amigos - a bilingual storytime, a Flutissimo performance, the E.L.F. book sale, Waggin' Tales storytime, Yarn Bomb at the library, Silent Book Club, and Parent Child Family Place Workshops. Ms. Jones encouraged the board to attend any of the upcoming programs. Ms. Knight spoke on various outreach events that are upcoming such as Trunk or Treat and the Fire Department's Open House. Chairperson Chac asked about the age group for Cuentos con Amigos so Ms. Jones expressed that it is mainly geared towards children, however anyone can attend who is interested in expanding their language capabilities. Ms. Portugal asked how the library has been advertising their programs. Ms. Jones spoke about the library's digital signage and social media. ITEM NO.5 REPORTS ❖ Library Board Chairperson Mr. Chac inquired about possible text promotions for programs. Ms. Jones explained the library calendar will send notifications if patrons opt -in for certain programs. Mr. Chac inquired about the attendance for Citizenship Classes and Ms. Knight reviewed recent updates to the class schedule. d• Library Board Vice Chairperson Vice Chairperson Flannery reminded the board of the Foundation's upcoming book sale on October 14�`. Ms. Flannery spoke about the plan for a children's book giveaway as well as the use of yard signs to spread awareness of the sale. •A Library Board Members Mr. Snitz reminded board members of the upcoming Open House for the Euless Police and Fire Departments. Mr. Hamilton spoke about the upcoming Movie in the Park event at Glade Parks and the Senior Center's annual holiday dinner. ITEM NO. 6 PUBLIC COMMENTS Ms. Portugal spoke about local outreach including emergency preparedness classes occurring for local seniors. Ms. Portugal expressed her appreciation of the display themes for the library's collection, referencing the new horror collection and the patron -centered classification system in the library. ITEM NO. 7 ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Chac asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Mr. Snitz and seconded by Mr. Hamilton. The meeting was adjourned at 7:46 p.m. Chairpers orge Chac Date
