Pre-Construction Commences For North Tarrant
Express Expansion Between Euless And Fort
Worth
By IrvingWeekly Staff | Published December 4, 2023
In a move to address the escalating demand for efficient transportation, pre -construction
activities have commenced for the expansion of a segment of the North Tarrant Express
(NTE) between Fort Worth and Euless. The $414 million investment aims to enhance
the capacity of one of the region's busiest corridors.
The expansion project, funded by toll revenues collected on the NTE TEXpress Lanes,
will introduce one general-purpose freeway lane and one tolled, managed lane in each
direction. This addition comes in response to the surging demand that has exceeded
the current capacity of the corridor.
The North Loop of Interstate Highway 820 will witness the inclusion of a toll-free
general-purpose lane in each direction, while the Airport Freeway (SH 183) will feature
a tolled managed lane in each direction. The project will also involve adjustments to
ramps, connectors, and the pedestrian bridge in Hurst.
Early activities include the installation of construction barriers and lane striping, with full-
scale construction set to commence in mid-2024. To minimize disruptions to drivers,
most construction activities will take place overnight. The ambitious project is scheduled
to span 42 months, with an anticipated completion date in early 2027.
The North Tarrant Express serves as a vital east-west corridor, traversing Northeast
Tarrant County and connecting cities between Fort Worth and Irving on the North Loop
of IH 820 and Airport Freeway (SH 183). Since its full opening in 2014, the NTE project
has significantly increased the corridor's capacity, and this expansion seeks to further
alleviate congestion and enhance transportation efficiency.
