HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-02-05Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board February, 05, 2024 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:01 PM. On Monday, February, 05, 2024, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Jones. Other Board Members present: John Raab, Jason Reyes and Laird Leavoy. Members absent: Magen Brown, Roger Sickler, Isha Sharma and Steve Doty. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Duane Strawn, Assistant Parks and Community Service Director Elizabeth Johnson, Parks Manager Randy Leach, Parks at Texas Star General Manager Chris Thames, Recreation Superintendent Alex Harvey and Administrative Secretary Jodie Dunn. Visitors present: Irma Reyes INVOCATION Chairman Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Jones asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the January 08, 2024 regular meeting. Jason Reyes made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by John Raab. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Magen Brown — West Park & Wilshire: Not present. b. Steve Doty — Midway & Blessing Branch: Not present. c. John Raab — Bob Eden & Trailwood: No items to report. d. Roger Sickler — Heritage Park & South Euless: Not present. e. Jason Reyes — J.A. Carr & Kiddy Carr: No items to report. f. Laird Leavoy — Preserve & MCCormick: No items to report. g. Isha Sharma — VOBC & Reflection: Not present. h. Chairman Jones — Parks at Texas Star: Not present. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 1 II. Business of the Tree Boa Tree Board Chairman Jason Reyes reported the following for January 111 — 3111, 2024: a. Total man hours for January 1st — 31st, 2024 = 850 • 80 Horticulture • 385 Forestry • 194 Greenhouse • 169 Special Projects • 22 Training ➢ Removed dead tree and limbs at JA Carr Park ➢ Removed large dead pecan hanger at Midway ➢ Removed several large broken branches from behind Bob Eden ballfield ➢ Held the annual Christmas Tree recycle event, chipped trees, bagged mulch for citizens, cooked hot dogs, and had a tree give away with planting guides available ➢ Stepped up Arbor Daze trees into 1 gal and 3 gal pots for 2024 Arbor Daze ➢ Started acorns for Arbor Daze trees for future giveaways ➢ Trimmed trees around Star Center parking lot and side walk along Pipeline ➢ Removed Catalpa tree on Highland due to over 50% of canopy being dead from freeze ➢ Removed several trees along ROW on mid cities intruding on mow areas and grinded stumps ➢ Trimmed trees at the Pauline green house in back of property III. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Athletics Report —Chris Thames • Introduction of staff members. Sandy Purcell handles softball related activities, Greg Smyers handles baseball related activities and Danielle Franklin handles all concessions for Parks at Texas Star. • The Adult baseball season will start on February 18, 2024. • Baseball registration is coming to an end. Select Baseball season will start on March 04, 2024 with Recreation baseball to follow on March 23, 2024. b. Parks Report — Randy Leach • Introduction of himself and his recent promotion. Randy has 17 years with the City of Euless. • Derrick Fennell was introduced as the recently promoted Parks Superintendent. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 • The area around Mid -Cities was cleaned of debris and litter and stumps were grinded. • There was stone damage at Legend's field and the Parks Department repaired the stone. • Cresthaven lots were cleaned of limbs and debris. • The dumpster was removed at Parks at Texas Star North and the area around the dumpster was cleaned. • Trees were stepped up at the Greenhouse. c. Aquatics & Senior Center Report— Richard Sharnsky • The Aquatic Staff consist of Richard Sharnsky, Jackson Davis and Alex Guiterrez. • The Senior Center staff consist of Sonja Howard and Shelli Walsh. • Employees took part in a CPR refresher course. • The Senior Center held their V Annual New Year's Eve Toast with a brunch. • The Senior Center also hosted an open house where they signed up 14 new members between the hours of 9am —12pm. • The Senior Center hosted a chili cook off where they were able to have Senior Center members enter their chili and win different prizes. • The Senior Center hosts pool tournaments on Thursday evenings which allows different people to get involved. • Cert Program held a CPR & ADD class. • The Aquatic staff is in full hiring mode for the summer season. They have had 30 applicants interested in open positions. d. Recreation Report —Alex Harvey • The Recreation team was introduced. Chance Boyd — Recreation Supervisor, Holden Garner — Recreation Coordinator and Justin Pickens — Recreation Assistant + Volunteer Coordinator. • The Daddy Daughter Dance was held on February 02, 2024 with 120 people in attendance. They participated in Makeup challenge on the Dads and the dance floor was busy. • The Spring Scavenger hunt will take place on March 13, 2024. The goodies will be hidden around the city. • Easter Splash will take place on March 23, 2024 at 9:30 am at the Euless Family Life Center Natatorium. A $10 per person entry fee is required. Registration is required and space is limited. • Movie in the Park will take place on March 15, 2024 with Shrek 2 playing. This is a free family event. • Spring Break Camp will take place from March 11 — 15, 2024. This will be held at the Euless Family Life Center between the hours of 7:30am — 6:00 pm. • Summer Adventure Camp will start back up the week of June 03, 2024. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 e. Directors Report — Duane Strawn • The Parks Administrative Office was introduced. This department offices in the Fire Administration Building. Duane Strawn — Director of Parks and Community Service, Elizabeth Johnson — Assistant Director of Parks and Community Service and Jodie Dunn — Administrative Secretary. • The Parks Master Plan kick off meeting will take place on February 26, 2024 from 10-12pm. This meeting will be attended by senior staff and the steering committee. We are hoping this will be a 9-12-month process. This will be where a needs list will be developed and hopefully a plan for the next 10 years. • We will be having tiles placed at the volleyball court on Midway. • All members should be signed up for NRPA and TRAPS. • We are looking for Arbor Daze judges for the food eating contest. Chairman Jones thanked the staff for their reports. IV. Other New Business • No items to report. V. Input from City Council Members and Visitors • No items to report.
