HomeMy WebLinkAbout90-731 05-08-1990RESOLUTION NO. 90 -731 CALLING FOR A RUN -OFF ELECTION FOR COUNCIL MEMBER PLACE FIVE WHEREAS, a canvassing of the returns and declaring the results of a regular city officers' election held on May 5, 1990, was approved by the City Council on May 8, 1990; and WHEREAS, the canvass determined that, in the race for Council Member Place Five, no candidate received 50 percent or more of the votes cast for such place; and WHEREAS, pursuant to the requirements of subsection (b) of Section 2.025 of the Texas Election Code as provided by Chapter 60, Acts of the 70th Legislature, second called session, and City of Euless, Texas, Resolution No. 88 -669, a run -off election shall be held between the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes cast for such office of council member, Place Five, on the next to the last Saturday in May immediately following such regular annual election; and WHEREAS, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes were Peter Staks and Todd Smith, and they are the candidates for such office of Council Member, Place 5, in a run -off election to be held on Saturday, May 19, 1990. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EULESS, TEXAS: That there shall be a run -off election to be held in the City of Euless, Texas, on the 19th day of May, 1990, for the purpose of filling the position of Council Member, Place Five. At said election all qualified voters of the city may vote for the election of said Place Five. The election shall be held at two polling places: MIDWAY RECREA- TION CENTER, 300 WEST MIDWAY DRIVE, and BEAR CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 401 BEAR CREEK DRIVE. Each of the above designated polling places shall be open on said election day from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mrs. Rosemary Gafford is hereby appointed clerk for absentee voting. The absentee voting for the above designated election shall be at City Hall, 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas, and said place of absentee voting shall remain open on each day for absentee voting that is not a Saturday, Sunday or an official state holiday, beginning on May 10, 1990, and continuing through Resolution No. -2- May 8, 1990 the fourth day, May 15, 1990, preceding the date of said elec- tion. Said place of voting shall remain open between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on each day for said absentee voting. The above described place for absentee voting is also the absen- tee clerk's address to which ballot applications and ballots voted by mail may be sent. Absentee voting both by personal appearance and by mail shall be by paper ballots and shall be canvassed by a Special Canvassing Board, with Mrs. Dorothy Wilkinson serving as Presiding Judge, and Martha Burlison, Assistant Election Judge, and she is hereby appointed the Special Canvassing Board for said election. The Election Judge is authorized and directed to appoint one or more clerks to assist in the conduct of the election. Said election shall be held in accordance with the Election Code of the State of Texas, and only resident qualified voters of said city shall be eligible to vote at said election. The order in which the names of the candidates are to be printed on the ballot shall be determined by a drawing conducted by the city secretary, as provided by the Texas Election Code. Notice of this election shall be given in accordance with the provisions of the Texas Election Code, and returns of said notice shall be made to the city secretary and the Mayor immediately after the closing of the polls. It is further found and determined that, in accordance with the order of this governing body, the city secretary posted written notice of the date, place and subject of this meeting on the bulletin board located in the City Hall, a place convenient and readily accessible to the general public. A copy of said posting shall be attached to the minutes of this meeting and shall be made a part thereof for all intents and purposes. PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED THIS 8th day of May, 1990.
