Neighborly News - January 2001
I want to take this
opportunity to introduce
in to you. I'm Lori De La
Cruz, the new Communications
Manager for Euless. Now that I've been
@'00/here a few months and have learned my way
around, I am looking forward to becoming a
resource to you and your neighborhoods. I recently
moved to the area with my 2-year-old daughter and
have discovered the joys of living in this terrific city.
And what a tremendous year we've had! We began
the year working hard to be prepared for Y2K and the
rest of the year went by like a blur. So many accom-
plishments in just twelve short months.
Starting with the planting of the Millennium: Tree
at 12:01a.m. on January 1 and ending with the New
Year's Celebration at Texas Star, there was quite a bit
of commotion in Euless in between.
In March, a state-of-the-art Rental Car Facility
opened at DFW Airport. The facility stands on land
within Euless' city limits on
Airport property, which means
0 that sales tax earned there goes
to Euless' coffers. In addition,
Euless voters passed a Motor Vehicle Rental Tax that
places an additional five percent tax on short-term
rental of cars in Euless, including the Rental Car
Facility. The motor vehicle tax revenue collected
from that facility is shared with the owners of the
Airport, Dallas and Fort Worth. Our share is estimat-
ed to be $3 million annually.
In April, the Dr Pepper StarCenter opened at the
Parks at Texas Star. Two regulation -sized ice rinks
and seating for 850 spectators have brought the thrill
of ice sports to Northeast Tarrant County.
Also in April, Arbor Daze 2000
brought in record crowds and featured
The Beach Boys and Davy Jones at
KLUV's O1dieFest. Keep your eyes and
ears open for KLUV to announce this
year's lineup — you're going to "luv" it.
Seeking to preserve Euless' history,
Shirley Melson Himes donated her family's house to
the City with the assurance that the original oak wood
and frame of the interior log
cabin would be restored
closely to its original state.
In March, the Himes Log
Cabin was disengaged from
its facade and moved to
Heritage Park, next to The
Fuller House at 201 Cullum
Dr. For seven months a restorationist labored to stay
true to the construction techniques used by the cabin's
builders. That included carving 1,100 wood pegs
because pioneers did not use nails. The Himes Log
Cabin is now open for tours by appointment.
And pretty soon it's going to be easier to move
around Euless once the construction on Harwood Rd.
and Mid -Cities Blvd is complete. From North Main
to SH 360, Harwood Rd. is well on its way to being
transformed into a six -lane divided roadway. The
project is scheduled to be completed by summer.
Since receiving final clearance from the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers for the bridge and channel work
at the creek, construction of Mid -Cities Blvd. is mov-
ing along quickly. Completion is set for the fall of
2001.
But what is the new year
bringing us for 2001 ?
Get your calendars ready...
it's going to be a busy year!
Four Tows: Hall Meetings are scheduled throughout
the city. This is our opportunity to bring you up to date
about ongoing projects, city development and special
issues. And it's your chance to address your city offi-
cials with your questions and concerns. The dates and
locations of the 2001 Town Hall Meetings are printed on
the back of this newsletter.
The Texas Star Concert Series
continues into the new year with
Terri Hendrix on January 27 and
Hank Thompson on February 23 at
the Texas Star Conference Centre.
Also early in the year, we will begin the recon-
struction of North Main Street. From SH 183 to
Harwood, North Main will be expanded to five lanes.
In addition, the wiring that currently runs overhead
will be moved underground and other landscaping and
signage upgrades will be made. Completion is pro-
jected for 2003.
With the spring comes Euless' salute to Arbor Day.
It's the 13th annual Arbor Daze 2001 festival sched-
uled for April 27, 28, 29. And as I mentioned earlier,
you're going to really enjoy the musical selections.
Watch for KLUV's announcement on March 3.
Then, just when summer's
starting to sizzle, join us at the
Villages of Bear Creek Amphi-
theater for this year's summer
musical, South Pacific. Bring a
blanket and a picnic dinner for
the performances on July 13,
14, 20 and 21.

very own SuperTarget and the new development it will bring
with it at SH 121 and Glade Rd.

dents throughout the year. The Rec Center offers classes and

gfie ered an amateur athlete's dream come true
