EULESS
March 8, 2000
Dear Euless resident,
As you recall, the City of Euless was considered home to thousands of egret birds last
summer. The birds did not have a sufficient water source therefore they searched for it in
your neighborhoods, posing a potential health risk. As the birds migrated last October,
the City of Euless began actively researching and seeking assistance from experts on
the best method to deter the birds from habitation in the wooded area on Midway Drive.
Instinctively, the birds will return to the same location as the previous year during their
migration (usually in March).
Biologists and experts who have successfully deterred the birds (in other cities) to
another habitation suggested the city use propane cannons as a noise detractor. These
cannons pose no danger to the federally protected bird and they are specifically used for
instances such as these to detract and not harm any animal or individual.
The city does want your neighborhood to be aware of the loud noise that will be
discharging from the propane cannon during the daylight hours. The scout birds will be
entering our area and we want to encourage the birds to migrate to a location more
suitable for both the birds and our citizens.
Additionally, we want you to be aware that the brush and debris contained within the
wooded area is being cleared off the site by the property owner, HEB Independent
School District. This will provide a more attractive area for our residents yet detract the
scout birds from their familiar area.
We believe that by taking these proactive measures, our residents and the birds will
benefit over the course of time. We ask for your patience during this endeavor and to call
upon the city if you have any questions (685-1410).
Sincerely,
Randy J. Byers
