HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-03-04Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board Monday, March 04, 2024 The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 PM. On Monday, March 04, 2024, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Vice Chairman John Raab. Other Board Members present: Steve Doty, Isha Sharma, Roger Sickler, Jason Reyes and Laird Leavoy. Members absent: Chairman Jones and Magen Brown. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Duane Strawn, Assistant Parks and Community Service Director Elizabeth Johnson, Parks Manager Randy Leach, Aquatics/Senior Superintendent Richard Sharnsky, Recreation Superintendent Alex Harvey and Administrative Secretary Jodie Dunn. Visitors present: Irma Reyes and Council Member Jeremy Tompkins INVOCATION Roger Sickler gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Vice Chairman Raab asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the February 05, 2024 regular meeting. Steve Doty made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Roger Sickler. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Magen Brown —West Park & Wilshire: Not present. b. Steve Doty— Midway & Blessing Branch: No items to report. c. John Raab — Bob Eden & Trailwood: No items to report. d. Roger Sickler — Heritage Park & South Euless: No items to report. e. Jason Reyes — J.A. Carr & Kiddy Carr: No items to report. f. Laird Leavoy — Preserve & McCormick: No items to report. g. Isha Sharma — VOBC & Reflection: No items to report. h. Chairman Jones — Parks at Texas Star: Not present. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 1 II. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Jason Reyes reported the following for February 1" — 291h, 2024: a. Total man hours for February 15t — 29th = 610 • 358 Horticulture • 164 Forestry • 32 Greenhouse • 0 Special Projects • 56 Training ➢ Picked up downed branches and removed broken branches at Trailwood ➢ Cleared up low hanging and encroaching branches on the trail at Bob Eden ➢ Raised up Desert Willows and Texas Sage at Coyote Bluff ➢ Stepped up Arbor Daze trees into 1 gal and 3 gal pots for 2024 Arbor Daze ➢ Removed dead trees at McCormick West and Harwood median ➢ Removed dead tree near Villages of Bear Creek playground ➢ Stump grinded numerous stumps throughout City of Euless ➢ Trimmed trees around dog park parking lot and the Preserve parking lot ➢ Trimmed right away on Main St. between Mid Cities Blvd and Glade Rd over sidewalk III. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Parks Report — Randy Leach • The new Athletic office has had Sod laid about 15 feet on the sides. • The area around Coyote Bluff has been cleaned. • The staff did stump grinding at Harwood Road and the Villages of Bear Creek. • Children's Health Star Center had the vines removed around the building and then was painted. • The playground install for Wilshire will start on March 04, 2024. • The Parks department installed the paddle system and court numbers on the pickleball courts. b. Recreation Report —Alex Ha • The Scavenger Hunt will take place on March 13, 2024 at 8:00 am — follow on Instagram • The Easter Splash will take place on March 23, 2024 starting at 9:30 am. • Movie in the Park will take place on March 15, 2024 at 7:00 pm partnering with Glade Park. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 • Kites over Euless and the Texas Trash off will happen on April 06, 2024 from 10am- 12pm at Villages of Bear Creek. • The Total Eclipse at the Star will be on April 08, 2024 from 11:00 am — 3:00 pm and the Library will also be partnering with PACS for this to be a great event. • Arbor Daze will take place on April 27, 2024 at Midway Park from 10:00 am — 9:00 pm. d. Aauatics & Senior Center Report — Richard Sharnsk • Seasonal Hiring as started with 68 applications turned in. • The Aquatic staff will have several classes to train lifeguards for the season. • The Senior Center staff held a CPR and First Aid class for staff for a refresher course. • The Senior Center also had a Beef Cooke off with Chef Bob. The Seniors love events like this and more will be held throughout the year. • The Senior Center hosted a field trip to the Bureau of Engraving. The trip attendance was full with several on a waitlist to attend the field trip. E. Directors Report — Duane Strawn • The Parks Master Plan is in full swing. We will have public meetings that Park Board members are asked to attend. Most of these meetings will take place after 5:00 pm. • Midway volleyball court lights should be installed his week or next. • The Pickleball paddle system is in place to help but will be self -policed and signs are in place that explain the rules during busy hours. • Wilshire Park is coming along. We are hoping that landscaping and irrigation will start soon. Grading work needs to be done and they may have to install a retaining wall. • We are starting the Texas Trash Off and would like Park Board to attend. • Jason Reyes and Isha Sharma were thanked for their dedication to the Park Board and will be missed. Vice Chairman Raab thanked the staff for their reports. IV. Other New Business No new business to report. V. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 Council Member Jeremy Tompkins attended the meeting and wanted to Thank Jason Reyes and Isha Sharma for their dedication to the Park Board and wished them luck in their new adventures. Council Member Jeremy Tompkins thanked the staff for all the fantastic work they put in. ADJOURNMENT Roger Sickler gave the benediction.
