HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-06-03Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board Monday, June 03, 2024 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 PM. On Monday, June 03, 2024, in the Pre -Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Jones. Other Board Members present: Steve Doty, John Raab, Roger Sickler, Laird Leavoy and Zariyan Stark . Members absent: Magen Brown. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Duane Strawn, Assistant Parks and Community Service Director Elizabeth Johnson, Parks Manager Randy Leach, Parks at Texas Star General Manager Chris Thames, Aquatics/Senior Superintendent Richard Sharnsky, Recreation Superintendent Alex Harvey and Administrative Secretary Jodie Dunn. Visitors present: No visitors present. INVOCATION Roger Sickler gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Jones asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the April 01, 2024 regular meeting. Roger Sickler made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by John Raab. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Magen Brown —West Park & Wilshire: Not present. b. Steve Doty — Midway, Blessing Branch, J.A. Carr & Kiddy Carr: No items to report. c. John Raab — Bob Eden & Trailwood: No items to report. d. Roger Sickler — Heritage Park & South Euless: No items to report. e. Laird Leavoy — Preserve & MCCormick: No items to report. f. Zariyan Stark — VOBC & Reflection: No items to report. g. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Roger Sickler reported the following for April 2024 & May 2024: a. Total man hours for April 15t — 30th = 1071 • 400 Horticulture • 147 Forestry • 36 Greenhouse • 168 Special Projects • 320 Training ➢ Planted 49 trees at Wilshire Park ➢ Replanted Euless Family Life Center bed and added a Purple Plum Tree ➢ Removed 2 dead trees at McCormick East ➢ Removed sucker on Hwy 10 and Mid Cities medians ➢ Removed dead Water Oak, Plum and Crape Myrtle at Midway Park ➢ Lifted the trees at entrance to South Euless ➢ Stepped up trees at greenhouse for Arbor Daze ➢ Handed out trees at Arbor Daze and tree cookies for kids b. Total man hours for Mav 1st — 315t = 379 • 188 Horticulture • 127 Forestry • 24 Greenhouse • 37 Special Projects • 3 Training ➢ Planted 2 Nelly Stevens at Wilshire Park ➢ Planted 6 Vitex and a Savannah Holly in bed at Children's Health Star Center ➢ Trimmed low branches along trail at VOBC ➢ Removed suckers on Hwy 10, gas well, Public Works and Mid Cities medians ➢ Lifted the trees along creek side of Blessing Branch ➢ Stepped up trees at greenhouse for Arbor Daze 2025 ➢ Lifted trees along creek at Kiddie Carr and raised up large Pecan at green house Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 III. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Athletics Report— Chris Thames • Summer Track has started and approximately 152 kids have signed up. Practice is held Monday — Thursday evenings and they will have circuit meets every Saturday in June with regionals and State in July. State will be held in Brownsville, TX. • Parks at Texas Star is hosting the Chili's Tournament on June 03, 2024. There are 32 teams that have registered. b. Parks Report — Randv Leach • The Parks Department have been working on storm debris cleanup. • Derrick Fennell and Mike Cullum partnered with the Senior Center where they gave tips on plants. They also handed out trees and plants to seniors. • Wilshire Park renovation is almost complete. The new playground has been installed and are working on landscaping. A ribbon cutting for Wilshire Park will take place and the Park Board will be invited. c. Recreation Report —Alex Harvey • We partnered with the Euless Library to host The Total Eclipse at The Star which took place on 04/08/24 with between 2,000-4,000 people in attendance. The event had many different vendors including bounce houses, T-Shirt printing, Face Painting and a DJ. • Arbor Daze was held on 04/27/24. There were over 5,000 people in attendance to this event with many different offerings. We had a food eating contest, many different activities for kids, a new activity this year was a Lumberjack Show and was loved by many. We also had a concert and a first ever Arbor Daze drone show. There were 150 drones and about a 15-minute show. • May 10, 2024 the Lover Tribute — Eras Tour performed at Glade Park. There were over 1,500 people in attendance. This was a huge hit! The performer had costume changes and a photo opportunity. People were so excited and were showing up at 4:30 to make sure they got the best seats! • Summer Camp will start on June Yd, 2024 with 80 kids signed up. • We will be hosting a few new events including a new pickleball event called Dare to Dink. We will also be hosting an event called Nerf Wars in the Basketball gym. This event will take place on August 09, 2024 and will cost $10.00 per child. All supplies will be provided. d. Aquatics & Senior Center Report — Rich Sharnsky • The Senior Center just had June sign ups with a beach towel and popsicle give away. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 • A plant swap was held in partnership with the Parks Department. Derrick Fennell and Mike Cullum from the Parks Department spoke to those members and also handed out trees and plants. • The Seniors also had a casino night with a taco bar for dinner. • There has been some concern with food disparity within the Senior Center so a food pantry has been set up. So far, this pantry has helped around 20 members. • The Aquatic team have been in training with the supervisors and other staff. The Euless Fire Department also has been involved and came out to train with the staff. • The Splash Pad and the Aquatic Park are open. • Outdoor swim lessons have started as well as evening indoor lessons. • Summer campers will be using the Aquatic Park as well as the Senior's will float the lazy river on Fridays. E. Directors Reaort — Duane Strawn • A few members have been given re -appointing letters. Please make sure to fill those out and turn in if it is desired to remain on the board. • Arbor Daze was a huge success and would like to give kudos to the staff for all their hard work and time that went in to pulling off this event. • The Parks Master Plan is still under way with a survey that is out for citizens to take. The ending date of this survey is June 26, 2024. • Wilshire Park has turned out to be a very pretty park. We are still tying up some lose ends and are planning to have a ribbon cutting hopefully at the end of the month. • Trailwood will be getting a new playground. A new playground has been selected and ordered. • The Highland Drive project is underway. The project has been awarded. There will be irrigation and landscaping with a split rail fence. • A change in time for the Parks Board meeting has been requested. An email will be sent out to each member with time options and a survey to see if a new time will suit each member. Chairman Jones thanked the staff for their reports. IV. Other New Business • With the Chairman of the Tree Board no longer on the Parks and Leisure Board a new chairman needed to be appointed. The Board elected to move Vice Chairman Roger Sickler to Chairman with Laird Leavoy appointed to Vice Chairman. Steve Doty approved this motion with John Raab seconding this motion.
