HomeMy WebLinkAboutParks Department Completed Projects since March 1982The following is a list of projects that the Parks dept. has completed since March of 1982. Aside from the normal maintenence of parks and public grounds, most of these projects required extra effort by the parks crew. The appearance of the city property was the main goal in these efforts Bear Creek Park (Includes Little Bear Creek and Trailwood) 1. A variety of trees including shade and fruit trees were planted as part of a plan to create an arboretum. 2. Dirt work was done on Ball Field #2 to fill low areas. 3. Four Hundred feet of the old creek bank on the east end of the park was sloped for better erosion and weed control. 4. Two flower beds were constructed and planted with Photinia, variegated pittosporum, and golden Euonymus. The Parks dept. was co -involved with eagle scouts and the Trailwood Garden Club in these projects. 5. Forty Crape Myrtles were planted around ball field fences. 6. 700 Crape Myrtles were planted in a tree farm for future projects. 7. Light fixtures around the restrooms were replaced. 8. All picnic tables, playground equipment, and garbage cans were repainted. 9. A backstop donated by the first Nazarene church was put at a practice field in the park. 10. Thirty -Four ornamental shade trees were planted around the park. 11. The pavillion and restrooms were repainted. Midway Park .l New metal bleacher seats werer installed at ballfield #1 and #3. 2. A new parking lot was built and a wood rail fence was constructed to handle the extra traffic during softball season. 3. The Parks dept. shop was repainted. 4. A new T-ball field was constructed and rye grass planted in the outfield. 5. All other ball field fences were repaired. 6. Press boxes were repainted. 7. Park trees were pruned and sprayed with dormant oil. 8. The entrance sign was redone and a flower bed constructed under it. 9. Thirty-eight native pecan and red oak trees were planted in the park. Being the oldest park in Euless, many of the trees already there are old and dying and will need to be replaced in the next few years. 10. The tennis courts nets were replaced and light fixtures fixed. J.A. Carr Park and Kiddie Karr Park 1. The jogging trail has been turf -shaped and new wood shavings applied. We do this 3 times a year. 2. A large floodlight was installed at the pavillion to help cut down on vandalism. 3. The creek behind the park was dredged out along with the removal of underbrush. 4. The "walk -over" bridge was repaired and new chain rails installed. 5. The mens and ladies restrooms at Simmons recreation center were repainted and the ladies room also received a new the floor. 6. All the picnic tables, garbage cans and playground equipment was repainted. 7. Kiddie Karr playland buildings were repainted as well as the pavillion. 8. The parking lot at the Simmons Recreation center was expanding toward the west in order to handle more cars for the recreation center and the joggers using the park. WestPark 1. All the ballfield bleachers were repainted. 2. Trees were.trimmed and the parking area was leveled and graded. 3. The creek was straightened and cleaned of brush and trash. 4. Nineteen trees were transplanted using the tree spade to provide shade for the athletes and spectators. 5. All the picnic tables were repainted. Wilshire 1. Swimming pool and buildings were repainted. 2. A portion of the fence at Wilshire tennis court was repaired. South Euless Park 1'. swimming pool and buildings were repainted. 2. Fifteen lights including 10 at the tennis court were replaced. City Hall Complex 1. All the'restrooms were repainted. 2. All the trees and roses were pruned. 3. 7 native cedar elms were planted in front of the complex along Ector Dr. 4. Two red oaks were planted behind the community building. 5. Three Sweet Gum trees were planted in front of the community building. 6. Twelve Crape Myrtles were planted in a new landscape bed in front of the complex. Harwood Soccer Fields 1. One new soccer field was added to the existing 9 making a total of 10 fields to accomodate the 1300 members of the Bedford -Euless Soccer Association. 2. Two large parking areas were graded and leveled and crushed rock was applied at the entrance. 3. A new gate was installed at the entrance 4. Twenty-two acres were sprayed for sandbur control. Lakewood 1. All playground equipment and trash barrels were repainted. 2. Windscreens were installed around the tennis courts and the courts were resurfaced. City Greenhouse and Nursery 1. Over 300 red oak and maple trees propagated in the greenhouse were planted in a tree farm behind the greenhouse for future use. 2. To maintain and care for these trees, an irrigation system was installed. 3. Bedding plants for the flower beds throughout the parks and public areas were propagated. 4. All the plants used for the interior landscape at the City Hall complex offices are maintained and cared for in the Greenhouse. S. All the 480 pecan trees given out to elementary students this year were propagated and grown in the greenhouse and lathe area. This is the 3rd year for this 10 year program. In addition to the parks, playgrounds, athletic fields and city hall complex, the Parks dept. maintains on a weekly basis approsimately S4 miles of road- sides, right -of ways, median strips, and boulevards.
