James P. Douglas Affectionately referred to by Colonel Herbert's 3rd Louisiana Infantry as "THEIR BRASS BAND". Originally organized on March 12, 1859 as the DALLAS LIGHT ARTILLERY, TEXAS VOLUNTEER MILITIA Entered the Confederacy on June 13, 1861 as GOOD'S TEXAS BATTERY, C.S.A. After Captain Good's resignation May 10,1862 renamed GOO D'S-DOUGLAS'S TEXAS BATTERY, C.S.A. Good's Texas Battery was the only Texas artillery battery to serve east of the Mississippi River. They traveled through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. They fought in the famous battles of Pea Ridge, Arkansas (Elk Horn Tavern) i Corinth, Mississippi • Murfreesborough, Tennessee • Chickamauga, Georgia • Missionary Ridge, Tennessee • Atlanta, Georgia • Nashville, Tennessee • Mobile, Alabama and many other smaller battles. After traveling over 5,000 miles and fighting 25 engagements, they finally surrendered on May 14, 1865 at Gainesville, Alabama. It is an error, recorded in history that Good's Texas Battery was captured during the battle of Pea Ridge. The battery which supposedly was captured was Hart's Arkansas Artillery Battery. Good's Texas Battery was reorganized in July, 1964 and is a charter unit of the National Re- enactment Society (formerly the Texas Brigade). Good's Texas Battery and other members of the National Reenactment Society are dedicated to the preservation of history in living form. Since its reorganization in 1964, the battery has participated in approximately 20 reenactments and 5 commemorative celebrations. It has traveled well over 5,000 miles. If you share an interest in our nation's glorious past and wish to express your appreciation for those men who gave their lives, then fill out an application and join now. The nation's 200th birthday is near and preparation must be made for those celebrations. Our aim is to establish a Revolutionary War unit also, therefore uniforms and drills have to be made now. If you cannot participate, your support would be deeply appreciated. We are a non-profit organi- zation and need any help that you may give us. If you have any questions concerning the battery please contact: Lt. Kenneth G. Richardson, Jr. Sgt.
