Essential Tips for Dealing with Winter Weather
Most people think of covering water pipes and outdoor plants when freezing weather is approaching. However,
there are "4 P's" to consider when the temperature dips. The 4 P's are: people, pets, plants and pipes. Learn
how to protect the 4 P's before the next cold snap hits.
People:
• During extreme weather, check on your neighbors,
especially the elderly.
• If you lose power, wear layers of clothing (including
gloves and hats) and use blankets or sleeping bags to
stay warm.
• Never turn on your car in the garage as a way to stay
warm.
• Never use a stove or oven to heat your home.
• Never turn on an outdoor grill inside the house to
generate heat.
• Never operate a generator inside the home, including
the basement or garage.
Pipes:
• Slowly drip water from indoor faucets to prevent
pipes from freezing, especially if the faucets are on
an outside wall.
• Open cabinets under these faucets to allow heat to
circulate around the pipes.
• Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor faucets.
• Cover outdoor pipes and faucets with Styrofoam
covers, or wrapped and secured towels.
• Turn off automatic sprinkler systems.
• If your pipes freeze or burst, promptly call City of
Euless Public Works to have the water turned off at
the meter to avoid a potential issue when the pipes
thaw.
Pets:
• Bring outdoor dogs and cats inside when it is
45 degrees or colder, especially if the pets are ill,
young, old, thin or have short fur.
• If you can't bring pets inside, provide them with
a warm, insulated shelter with the opening pointed
away from the wind and ensure that their water
isn't frozen.
Plants:
• For plants that aren't winter hardy, bring them
indoors.
• Cover outdoor plants with frost cloth (floating row
cover) and secure the cloth with bricks, rocks or
other heavy objects. Old sheets, blankets or burlap
also work.
Helpful Numbers:
• Report power outages to Oncor at
1-888-313-4747 or stormcenter.oncor.com
• Report gas issues to Atmos at 1-866-322-8667
• For assistance turning off your water, contact
Euless Public Works at 817-685-1580
• For after-hours assistance, please contact
non -emergency dispatch at 817-685-1526
