HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-01-06Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board January, 06, 2025 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 6:01 PM. On Monday, January, 06, 2025, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Jones. Other Board Members present: Magen Brown, Steve Doty, John Raab, Roger Sickler and Michael Dayton. Members absent: Laird Leavoy and Gabriel Rosas. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Duane Strawn, Assistant Parks and Community Service Director Elizabeth Johnson, Parks Manager Randy Leach, Aquatics/Senior Superintendent Richard Sharnsky, Recreation Superintendent Alex Harvey and Administrative Secretary Jodie Dunn. Visitors present: None Present INVOCATION Roger Sickler gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Jones asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the November 04, 2024 regular meeting. Steve Doty made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by John Raab. The vote was unanimous. I. Election of Officers Chairman Jones advised that the current Park Officers are: Chairman — Randy Jones, Vice Chairman —John Raab and Secretary —Steve Doty. The current Tree Board Officers are: Chairman — Jason Reyes and Vice Chairman — Roger Sickler. Chairman Jones stated that each officer will be elected by nomination and then vote of the Park Board. He opened the floor for nominations. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 1 Steve Doty made a motion to nominate Randy Jones for Chairman of the Park Board. The motion was seconded by John Raab. There were no other nominations and the vote to approve was unanimous. Randy Jones made a motion to nominate John Raab for Vice Chairman. The motion was seconded by Roger Sickler. There were no other nominations and the vote to approve was unanimous. Randy Jones made a motion to nominate Steve Doty for Secretary. The motion was seconded by John Raab. There were no other nominations and the vote to approve was unanimous. John Raab made a motion to nominate Roger Sickler for Chairman of the Tree Board. The motion was seconded by Randy Jones. There were no other nominations and the vote to approve was unanimous. John Raab made a motion to nominate Magen Brown as Vice Chairman of the Tree Board. The motion was seconded by Steve Doty. There were no other nominations and the vote to approve was unanimous. The new 2025 Park Board Officers are: Chairman — Randy Jones, Vice Chairman — John Raab and Secretary —Steve Doty. The new 2025 Tree Board Officers are: Chairman — Roger Sickler and Vice Chairman — Magen Brown. II. Board Member Reports a. Magen Brown — West Park & Wilshire: No items to report. b. Steve Doty — Midway, Blessing Branch, J.A. Carr & Kiddy Carr: No items to report. c. John Raab — Bob Eden & Trailwood: No items to report. d. Roger Sickler — Heritage Park & South Euless: No items to report. e. Laird Leavoy — Preserve & McCormick: Not present. f. Vacant — VOBC & Reflection: g. Chairman Jones — Parks at Texas Star: No items to report. II. Business of the Tree Board 2024: Tree Board Chairman Roger Sickler reported the following for November and December a. Total man hours for November 1st — 30th = 825 • 48 Horticulture • 101 Forestry Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 • 260 Greenhouse • 392 Special Projects • 24 Training ➢ Collected acorns for Arbor Daze trees. ➢ Removed 3 trees next to old green house for tree line expansion. ➢ Removed 1 large Hackberry at North well lot. ➢ Stepped up Arbor Daze trees at greenhouse for 2025. ➢ Removed broken branch on Priest and Baze Rd. and trimmed trees along sidewalk. ➢ Trimmed trees at bird watching station at the Preserve Park and lifted trees down to the dock at the pond. b. Total man hours for December 15t — December 3151 = 845 • 272 Horticulture • 32 Forestry • 18 Greenhouse • 523 Special Projects • 0 Training ➢ Removed dead American Elm tree on Cresthaven lot. ➢ Trimmed low branches at PATS North and South Complex's. ➢ Trimmed trees on Highland. ➢ Removed 3 Red Oaks on Fair Oaks Drive. ➢ Removed branch on Post Oak and removed Hackberry at South Euless from home owner's backyard. ➢ Removed up rooted tree along creek at South Euless that fell on to fence. III. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Parks Reaort — Randv Leach • Randy introduced himself to new members. Randy has been with the City of Euless for 18 years and has been the Parks Manager for 1 year. • New Concrete was added to the dock at Wilshire. • The Pond was also stocked at Wilshire with 1000 lbs. of trout. • The Parks department mulched and planted at the Temporary Police Department. • The Christmas Tree was put up and this year Christmas Ornaments were added to the tree. • The department worked on the floats for the Parade of Lights. This year they were tasked with doing the float for the Park Board as well as the float for Santa and Mrs. Claus. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 b. Recreation Report —Alex Harvey • Alex updated the Board on the Upcoming Events. ■ Daddy Daughter Dance — February 07, 2025 at The Texas Star Golf Course. ■ Concert in the Park — March 14, 2025 at Glade Parks (Abbey Road Trip). ■ Movie in the Park — March 21, 2025 at Glade Parks (The Lorax). ■ Texas Trash Off — April 5, 2025 — Location is TBD. ■ Easter Splash —April 12, 2025 at Euless Family Life Center. ■ Arbor Daze —April 26, 2025 at Glade Parks. ■ Concert in the Park — May 02, 2025 at Glade Parks. • Spring Playbook is Life. You can find this on the City Website under Parks and Community Service. • Heritage Park Christmas was held on December 14, 2024. Many people attended. There was hot chocolate, Santa pictures, Letters to Santa and much more. • Winter Blast Zumba was held with 32 people that signed up. • Fitness Center had a few upgrades. New storage units were added as well as barbells and a Hoist Functional Trainer. • New flooring was added in the Activity rooms as well as updated paint. • The Gym floor was screened and re -coated. • The PA System was replaced. New Speakers were added and also additional speakers. This system is Blue Tooth capable. d. Aquatics & Senior Center Report — Rich Sharnsky • Swim with Santa was held on December 13, 2024 in the Natatorium at the Euless Family Life Center. 51 people were in attendance. • Summer hiring has begun. We have already had 6 new candidates apply. • Another session of swim lesson has started today, January 06, 2025. • The Senior Center held a 14 Year Anniversary Brunch. Chef Bob prepared the lunch. • HEB Suzuki students performed Christmas songs for the Seniors. • A Chili Cook Off was held at the Senior Center with Chef Bob taking home the Win! • The Seniors held a New Years Eve Senior Lunch. This was attended by many and loved by all. E. Directors Report — Duane Strawn • Duane wanted to thank the staff for an Amazing 2024. • 2025 Calendar of events was handed out. Duane would like to have members to at least 5 or 6 of the events and you can pick the ones you would like to attend. • Duane discussed the importance of attendance at the Park Board Meetings. He would like all members to RSVP that they will or will not be in attendance. • The Master Plan is coming to a close. WE are hoping to have the preliminary results to the Park Board in February. The Park Board will adopt the plan so council can approve from there. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 • There are projects in the design phase such as Kiddie Carr and Phase 8 at PATS. • The City will be having a Town Hall meeting on January 16, 2025 @ 7:00 PM. • Duane would like to do 2 off site Park Board meetings. These will be announced ahead of time and will still take place on the First Monday of the month at 6:00 PM. • Tree Recycling will take place on January 11, 2025 from 10:00 AM —1:00 PM. Chairman Jones thanked the staff for their reports. IV. Other New Business No new business to report. V. Input from City Council Members and Visitors No City Council Members or Visitors present.
