HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-02-03Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board February, 03, 2025 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 6:00 PM. On Monday, February, 03, 2025, in the Pre Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Jones. Other Board Members present: Magen Brown, Steve Doty, Roger Sickler, Laird Leavoy, Michael Dayton and Gabriel Rosas. Members absent: John Raab. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Duane Strawn, Assistant Parks and Community Service Director Elizabeth Johnson, Parks Manager Randy Leach, Parks at Texas Star General Manager Chris Thames, Aquatics/Senior Superintendent Richard Sharnsky, Recreation Superintendent Alex Harvey and Administrative Secretary Jodie Dunn. Visitors present: Loretta Doty and Melissa Collins INVOCATION Roger Sickler gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Jones asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the January 06, 2025 regular meeting. Roger Sickler made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Steve Doty. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Magen Brown —J.A. Carr & Kiddie Carr: No items to report. b. Steve Doty — Bob Eden & Trailwood: No items to report. c. John Raab — Preserve & McCormick: Not present. d. Roger Sickler — VOBC & Reflection: No items to report. e. Michael Dayton — West Park & Wilshire: No items to report. f. Laird Leavoy — Midway & Blessing Branch: No items to report. g. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Roger Sickler reported the following for January 15t — 311t, 2025: a. Total man hours for January I" — 3111 = 870 • 363 Horticulture • 248 Forestry • 20 Greenhouse • 239 Special Projects • 0 Training ➢ Removed dead American Elm and trimmed Pecan at Star Center parking lot ➢ Removed dead Pecan at Texas Star North parking lot ➢ Removed Hackberry that fell into park from creek at Blessing Branch ➢ Trimmed limbs around all new solar lights at Blessing Branch ➢ Removed branches overhanging fence at Parkside on the Creek Apartments ➢ Chipped up trees at the Christmas Tree recycle drop off area ➢ Pulled new acorns out of fridge to get seedlings started for Arbor Daze M. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Athletics Report —Chris Thames • The turf project is complete. • The Archway at PATS North is almost finished. The only thing left is to add lights. • The split rail project will begin soon. The split rail will be on the north side to Pipeline and flower beds will be added. • Spring Baseball is underway. 95 teams have signed up this year. Last year we had 69 teams so registration is up. • We are still struggling with practice fields and are hoping that Phase VIII will include multi -use fields that will also have lights. b. Parks Report— Randy Leach • The Parks Department removed the playground at PATS South. A new playground has been purchased and will hopefully start to be installed next week. • We replaced turf on the 3rd baseline on one of the fields. • The Parks Department held the Christmas Tree recycling again this year. The mulch from the trees is left in the parking lot for citizens to use. • Fire Station #2 has been undergoing landscaping additions. Dirt work, rock on side backside of building, adding turf, installing a French drain, installing irrigation and adding trees. Page 2 Parks and Leisure Services Board c. Recreation Report —Alex Harvey • The Spring Playbook is live. • Daddy Daughter Dance will be held on February 07, 2025 at the Texas Star Golf Course. • Concert in the Park will be on March 14, 2025 from 6pm-8pm with Abbey Road Trip performing. This will take place at Glade Parks. • The Lorax will be playing at Movie in the Park on March 21, 2025 starting at 7:00 pm. This event will take place at Glade Parks. • The Texas Trash Off will take place on April 5, 2025 from 8am-11am. The event will start at the Euless Family Life Center where breakfast will be provided and then park assignments will be handed out. • Arbor Daze will be held at a Glade Parks on April 26, 2025 from 10am-9pm. This is a brand-new location for this event and we couldn't be more excited. With this being a new location there will be new elements to this event. • May 02, 2025 will be the second Concert in the Park. Gone Country — A Tribute to Alan Jackson will be performing. This will be from 6:OOpm — 8:OOpm. • The Euless Family Life Center had the gym curtain replaced. The new gym curtain has the new Parks and Community Service logo. d. Aquatics & Senior Center Report — Rich Sharnsky • A new session of swim lessons started on February 03, 2025. We have a great group of instructors on staff and are excited to see the swim lesson classes continue. • Water Aerobics has been a great class with many people attending. • Easter Splash will take place on April 12, 2025 and we have purchased 5,000 eggs to release in the pool. • The Senior Center held their 1s1 Art Show. They had many different art pieces ranging from Quilting to Hawaiian Braiding, • The Senior Center also held an open house. This is to highlight the programs of the Senior Center so patrons can see what they have to offer. • The Senior Center took a Mystery Lunch Field Trip. Shelli Walsh picks a place and takes the seniors for lunch. • The Senior Center has started a Food Pantry. On behalf of the Senior Center we would like to Thank Laird for his generous donation to the pantry. E. Directors Report — Duane Strawn • Loretta Getchell has retired with 27 years of service. Chris Barker has been appointed to City Manager. • Steven Viera has been hired as Assistant Manager as well as Lawrence Bryant who will start in March. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 • At the March Parks Board meeting Dunaway will present the Parks Open Space Master Plan. You will be sent the plan to review before this meeting. • We have several different consultants proposing ideas for different projects such as Design for South Euless Park, Kiddie Carr Park, PATS Phase VIII and the batting cage area at PATS South. Chairman Jones thanked the staff for their reports. IV. Other New Business • No new items to report. V. Input from City Council Members and Visitors • Visitor Melissa Collins asked about re -development of the Euless Family Life Center. It has been requested to bring more classes such as art and social type classes for individuals that aren't able to join the Senior Center but are older than what is offered currently at the Euless Family Life Center.
