The transition from late nights to early mornings is tough on everyone. With school starting in mid-August, I recommend starting the early morning routine a week or two prior to the first day of school, and I would like to kindly remind everyone to slow down and be aware of the school zones. Behind the scenes, city staff have been busy putting the finishing touches on the new proposed budget. After months of meetings, planning, and crunching numbers, they’re finalizing where these funds will go. Decisions will be made on road repairs, parks, public safety, and community programs, all while ensuring the city remains financially sound, continues to run smoothly, and meets the needs of all our wonderful residents. So, as we say goodbye to all the summer fun, let’s welcome and encourage the excitement of the new school year. Last but not least, I want to thank all the amazing staff who worked tirelessly to prepare a proposed budget that will continue to keep our City FabEuless! Midway Drive Back-to-School Keeping Kids Safe It’s that time of year again, when children are walking, carpooling, or riding the bus to school every day. Starting August 13, drivers should anticipate increased traffic as children return to school. Kids walking to class or boarding buses can be easily distracted, so it’s important to allow extra time for your commute, and exercise additional caution in school zones and residential areas. To safely share the road with school kids, drivers should:• Obey school zone speed limit signs• Put away the cell phone• Obey the crossing guard• Drop off and pick up children in the designated areas• Look for crosswalks and prepare to stop• Watch for children running between vehicles• Stop for flashing red lights or a stop sign on a school bus, regardless of which direction you’re headed, as this is the law• Do not pass unless: the school bus has resumed motion, the bus driver signals you to proceed, or the red lights are no longer flashing Remember, the first day of school for the HEB and Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School Districts is August 13. Operation Back 2 School Volunteers Needed Saturday, August 9Pat May Center1849 Central Drive, Bedford City offices will be closed on Monday, September 1 for Labor Day. Trash and recycling services will run as normal. 6 Stones Mission Network is helping youth build a better future one student at a time. By partnering with the HEB Independent School District, it’s providing free backpacks and school supplies to economically disadvantaged children. Over 61.5% of HEB ISD students come from homes that fall within this category. Having served over 3,000 students in 2024, Operation Back 2 School uplifts families across the community. You can help one of these children for just $40 or you can “adopt” a whole classroom for $800. Volunteers are a vital component of this community mobilization as it distributes supplies and hope for the start of the school year. In 2024, 715 volunteers gave 2,444 hours of time to help those in need. Adults and children 16 years and older are welcome to volunteer for Operation Back 2 School setup, distribution, and tear down. For more information about volunteer roles or to donate, please visit the 6 Stones’ website: 6stones.org/ob2s. Thursday, August 21, 10 a.m.Euless Family Life Senior Center300 W. Midway Drive Have you ever wondered where your tax dollars go? The total sales tax rate in Euless is 8.25% (6.25% State and 2.0% City) and is applied to all taxable purchases made in the city. Property taxes are the largest revenue source for the City. The City property tax represents approximately 23% of your overall property tax rate. These tax dollars fund the day-to-day operations of the City, including 24-hour police, fire and EMS services, public works, parks and recreation, animal services, library services, building inspections, code compliance, and other essential City services. Tax funds also go towards special projects, including renovating parks, improving streets and more. The remaining 77% of your overall property tax rate goes to fund the school district, county, hospital district, and the college district. Taxpayers may qualify for various property tax exemptions, such as a Homestead Exemption, Over 65 Exemption, or Over 65 Tax Ceiling. To check eligibility, contact Tarrant Appraisal District by visiting www.tad.org or calling 817-284-3925. Call 811 Before You Dig: It’s the Law!Calling 811 Reduces Risk of Damaged Utility Lines by 99 Percent Did you know that before you dig, the law requires you to call 811 to have buried utility lines located and marked? August 11 (8/11) serves as a reminder to always call 811 and your local municipality before digging. Calling 811 connects you to your local call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of your intent to dig. This excludes water and wastewater lines. Professional locators then go to the dig site to mark the locations of underground utility-owned lines with flags and spray paint, free of charge. All excavators should call 811 at least two business days before and no more than 14 days prior to digging on public or private property. The City of Euless maintains utilities including water and wastewater mains. Public Works will locate these utilities at no additional cost. For line locates on City utilities, please call Public Works at 817-685-1694. When you call 811 before digging, the chance of hitting an underground utility line decreases to less than one percent. Since 2008, Atmos Energy has seen a 36 percent increase in requests by the public to have underground natural gas lines marked. Once underground utility lines are marked, it is important to take special care around all line markings by digging by hand. “The greatest risk to our natural gas pipelines is accidental damage while digging,” said John Paris, President of Atmos Energy’s Mid-Tex Division. “Even minor damages, such as a scrape, dent or crease in a pipeline or its coating, can cause a leak.” Striking a single line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a call to 811. Installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree and laying a patio are all examples of digging projects that need a call to 811 before starting. For more information about 811 and safe digging practices, visit these websites: call811.com or atmosenergy.com/811. Keeping Mosquitoes Away Mosquito season reaches its peak during summer, and per Orkin’s annual report, the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex has the seventh-highest amount of mosquito activity in the country. The City of Euless has five mosquito monitoring sites throughout the City. These sites contain traps that are monitored and tested weekly, in partnership with Tarrant County Public Health, for mosquito-borne illnesses, such as West Nile virus and St. Louis Encephalitis virus. Mosquito spraying is only done in response to a positive test result in Euless. To help prevent mosquitoes, and reduce the risk of spreading illnesses, residents should:• Eliminate standing water• Fix water leaks• Protect and clean pools and ponds• Clean birdbaths once a week• Clean rain gutters• Install and repair screens on windows and doors• Remove or tip over water-collecting objects• Keep lawn trimmed• Report unusually high mosquito presence to the city Residents can sign up for email notifications regarding mosquito spraying by visiting www.eulesstx.gov/enotification and enrolling in Community Alerts. For general questions or concerns regarding mosquitoes, call Public Works at 817-685-1580.
