These Euless high schoolers are looking to

When Prashid Lamichhane first experienced a migraine with aura symptoms a couple of
years ago, he didn’t know what was going on.
For about 30 minutes, he saw shimmering zigzagging lines that grew in size. The
condition, which has no cure, came out of nowhere, Lamichhane said.
“The first time was kind of scary,” the 16-year-old said. “I thought I was losing my
vision.”
As Lamichhane learned more about the neurological condition, he realized very little
eye health information was readily accessible. And despite the fact that many people
have problems with their eyes — ranging from astigmatism to color blindness to dry eye
— most don’t talk about it.
Lamichhane decided to do something in 2024 and created Ocura Eye Health. What
started as a local initiative at Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD’s Trinity High School has
expanded its influence and helped create the city of Euless’s Eye Health Awareness
Week in March.
Ocura is looking to become a nonprofit this summer.
“We didn’t really know what the clear goal was,” Lamichhane said. “We just had a team,
and we just knew we were gonna do something with eye health and awareness in our
community. Seeing these different positive reactions from people through online
comments motivated us to further pursue this cause.”
The group has primarily promoted its work through online outreach and events, such as
informative social media posts, publicly accessible webinars and presentations to local
students, covering topics such as ocular migraines and vision care.
Ocura envisions more in-person events for the community.
“I feel like you would get more people (involved with) a program or initiative if you
connected with them in-person rather than just (through) a presentation,” said Ryan
Shivakoti, head of financial outreach at Ocura.
The organization also looks to connect prospective medical students with mentors in the
industry and the academic space.
International expansion is also important for the group. Ocura has already given a
presentation at the Nightingale School in Kathmandu, Nepal, but the organization is
searching for more international officers to host other informative sessions for young
students.
“As we gained momentum, we decided to scale it up and become more virtual
internationally,” Lamichhane said.
The support from family members and teachers in the Euless community has been
instrumental in inspiring the high schoolers’ efforts, Lamichhane said.
“We got a lot of positive responses from people that also had different eye health issues
within our community. People outside our community were also supportive of it, and
they were commenting really positive things (on social media),” he said. “And that just
further motivated us to kind of pursue what we thought was right.”

Animal Shelter to Undergo Major Renovation,
Animal Services Operations to Temporarily Move
to Euless
News and Events
Posted on May 20, 2026
Big news! The Bedford Animal Shelter is getting a major renovation, expansion, and
facelift over the next year. Once complete, the updated shelter will provide improved
facilities for both animals and staff, increased capacity for adoptable pets, and
expanded spaces to better serve residents and pets. The project is currently estimated
to be completed in spring 2027.
The renovation will include a complete interior reconfiguration and a significant exterior
upgrade to the existing building. The shelter will also be expanded by 2,600 square feet,
increasing the total size from 4,900 to 7,500 square feet. Planned improvements include
new meet-and-greet rooms for adopters and pets, covered patios and exterior kennels,
perimeter fencing, and updated facilities designed to enhance safety, comfort, and
efficiency for both staff and animals.
What Happens Next
Construction is expected to begin Monday, June 1. During construction, the City of
Bedford will partner with the City of Euless and temporarily operate out of the Euless
Animal Shelter, located at 201 W. Euless Blvd. Prior to the transition, staff have fully
packed the Bedford facility and relocated all adoptable pets to the Euless shelter.
Starting Friday, May 22, residents may visit the Euless Animal Shelter at 201 W. Euless
Blvd. to view adoptable Bedford (and Euless) animals, drop off donations, or register
their pet. Residents looking to surrender an animal or who have found a stray should
also plan to bring them to the Euless Animal Shelter beginning May 22. Anyone looking
to adopt an animal may come to the shelter during open hours; an appointment is not
required.
Bedford and Euless Animal Services staff will work side-by-side at the Euless shelter
until Euless Animal Services staff move into their new facility in the coming weeks. At
that time, Bedford Animal Services will continue operating out of the temporary Euless
shelter for the duration of the Bedford Animal Shelter renovation, which is expected to
be complete next spring.
Euless Shelter Hours
While operating from the Euless Animal Shelter, public hours will be:
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tuesday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Closed Sunday
Animal control response, along with field services and emergency calls in Bedford will
continue as normal throughout construction. Staff will be based at both the Euless
Animal Shelter and the Bedford Police Department, and the Bedford Animal Shelter’s
main phone number (817-952-2191) will remain the same throughout the project.
To view adoptable animals, visit www.bedfordtx.gov/adopt. Bedford will continue to
provide updates throughout this project on all communication channels.
