HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-12-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes December 14, 2015 CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman, Barbara Collier, called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m. The meeting was held at the Texas Star Golf Course, at 1400 Texas Star Parkway, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Don Martin, Gary Fieldsend, Veva Lou Massey, David Massey, Gary Parker, Mavy Wright, Doris Brown, Joe Cannon, Marilyn Long, Andy Weinzapfel, Weldon Cannon, Robert Nail, Mary Lib Saleh, Helen Payton, Norma Lively and Faye Stinneford. VISITORS PRESENT Mayor Linda Martin STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mary Lib Saleh made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Doris Brown seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $12,034.08. There was a deposit of$66.75 from the donation box and jar. The current balance is $12,100.83. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports / Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. Discussed Christmas decorations Suzanne will be purchasing at discount. b. Weldon Cannon was very impressed with the Texana group and their presentation in the Himes Log House. c. The tour for January 4, 2016 for the City's senior program is confirmed. Everything is good to go. 2. Acquisitions—Bill Byers: a. Robert Wiser brought family photographs and newspaper clipping to the Museum. An oral history recording of him was suggested. Maybe report to council at some point. b. David Massey reported there was a memorial service for Billy Lincoln recently. He donated the Coast Guard uniform for display at the Library. His spouse was asked for an 8x10 military photo of him for the Museum. HPC MTG 011116 Page 1 c. Doll on the bed in the Log House: a citizen said she had an authentic one and will donate it. 3. Library Display—no report 4. Website t Facebook—no report 5. Heritage Park--no report 6. Local Historical Marker—no report 7. Publicity—Barbara Collier a. Speakers will be given a small compensation. b. Faye Stinneford, Bill Byers, Andy Weinzapfel are also members of the Sub- committee. c. Faye Stinneford made a motion to acquire Christmas ornaments. David Massey seconded the motion, motion carried. Suzanne Hendrickson will look into acquiring Christmas ornaments. d. The following are programs to generate visitors to the museum: • 'February, Mike and Leland Brown will sing and drawings for South Euless Elementary School contest will be displayed. Drawings will be judged and the first place winning drawing will be hung in the Museum for six months. A party for children and their parents will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2016. Faye Stinneford made a motion to approve expenses for the event of up to $500. Doris Brown seconded the motion. All were in favor, motion approved. • Party inside the Museum with food will be allowed. Cookies and drinks only. • March, Revolutionary War Reenactor Bill Covington will speak. • April, Historic trees in Euless. • September, Lance Tahmahkera, Great-great-grandson of Quanah Parker. • Andy Weinzapfel made a motion to give gift card or a small donation to the speakers. Mary Lib Saleh seconded the motion. All were in favor. 8. Plaque—Faye Stinneford reported that the plaques are updated. 9. Display Signs—No report. 10.Oral History 1 Photography—Robert Wiser will be contacted to do an oral history. 11.Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel reported that a square nail was found on the strip of land next to Highway 183. Homes existed on the property over the years. HPC MTG 011116 Page 2 12.Historical Albums—Still need a list of what yearbooks are missing so they can be advertised on Facebook. 13.Texas State Historical Marker Appfication—It was reported that three weeks ago Tarrant County reported they received the application for the "Education in Euless" historical marker. The application has been sent to the state for review. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff reported that Ofa Faiva-Siale is out due to family illness. COMMITTEE / OTHER REPORTS 1. Andy Weinzapfel suggested inviting Robert Wiser to become a member of the Committee. 2. Gary Fieldsend talked about memberships versus volunteers and the need to get younger members. 3. Mavy Wright and Doris Brown want to talk to the people at the senior center to recruit and generate more interest in memberships. 4. Mayor Linda Martin suggested reaching out to other groups such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Trinity High School, etc. 5. Weldon Cannon mentioned an article in the Star Telegram about the "Homeless Tree" on 1-30. 6. It was reported that Snowball Express this morning had about 400 children at Itz Pizza. 7. Faye Stinneford congratulated Suzanne Hendrickson for being named Employee of the Year. Members congratulated her on her achievements. 8. Doris Brown thanked the City of Euless for all their support. 9. Andy Weinzapfel asked if he could give the "Historic Tree" presentation at the next meeting. 10.Helen Payton reported that there weren't enough parking spaces available during Heritage Park for the docents. ADJOURNMENT Gary Parker made a motion to adjourn the meeting. David Massey seconded the motion. Motion approved.
