HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-01-11 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes January 11, 2016 CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman, Barbara Collier, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall, 201 N. Ector Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown, Michele Burger, Bill Byers, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Gary Fieldsend, Leon Hogg, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Mary Lib Saleh, Helen Voss, Andy Weinzapfel and Mavy Wright. VISITORS PRESENT Bill Griffith, Jane Njuguna, Janell Haggart STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale and Senior Corporal Rocky Fimbres APPROVAL OF MINUTES Andy Weinzapfel indicated that item#12 on page 3 should say that the Texas Historical Commission received the marker application instead of Tarrant County. Leon Hogg made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $12,100.83. There was an expenditure of$71.94 for flowers for a funeral. The current balance is $12,028.89 GUEST SPEAKERS 1. Senior Corporal Rocky Fimbres gave a presentation about the new open carry law and answered questions for the Committee. 2. Andy Weinzapfel gave a presentation about "Historical Trees" in the area. Members were asked to submit nominations for trees with historical significance to the area. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports / Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. The City's senior program visited and had 25 people. b. South Euless Elementary visited and had 120 people. c. A sign up list was handed out for docents for a church group tour on January 21, 2016. HPC MTG 020816 Page 1 2. Acquisitions—Bill Byers reported that a Tennessee Dairy milk can was acquired. 3. Library Display—Marilyn Long is currently working on the project. 4. Website\ Facebook—Barbara Collier wants to advertise various programs on Facebook. 5. Heritage Park—No Report. 6. Local Historical Marker—No report. 7. Publicity—Barbara Collier a. There was a discussion about the upcoming programs. Questions about form of payment for the speakers, presenters, etc. in addition to whether the Committee needed to vote on certain actions before programs/projects are implemented. b. After a brief discussion Andy Weinzapfel made a motion to allow a $50 gift card for each program. Gary Fieldsend seconded the motion. No one opposed, motion carried. c. Money will come out of the Committee's balance and not the City's budgeted funds. d. Mrs. Collier and the Publicity Task Force will meet further to look into the Committee's concerns. e. Mary Lib Saleh noted how crowded the Museum was when South Euless Elementary recently visited. She had concerns about available space inside the Museum to accommodate the students, parents, etc. for the art contest event. After some discussion, it was decided Mary Lib Salah will contact South Euless Elementary and the Mary Lib Saleh Library to see if either of these facilities could be used instead of the Museum. f. Barbara Collier contacted Betsy Deck regarding advertising the event in the City's newsletter (Euless Today). 8. Plaque—No report. 9. Display Signs—No report. 10.Oral History\ Photography—Gary Fieldsend a. Could use help with the oral history interviews if anyone was interested. b. Asked if anyone could photograph the Airport Freeway corridor between Ector and Main Street before the Highway expansion occurs. Long John Silver and Wendy's have closed down. 11.Artifact Recovery—No Report. 12.Historical Albums—No Report. 13.Texas State Historical Marker Application—No report. HPC MTG 020816 Page 2 STAFF REPORT 1. Board and Commission Dinner will be on Monday, February 22, 2016. Members need to RSVP. 2. A new Christmas tree has been acquired for the Committee. The tree has LED lights. 3. Ofa Faiva-Siale thanked the Committee for their prayers and the flowers received for her father's passing. COMMITTEE/ OTHER REPORTS ADJOURNMENT Robert Nail made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Gary Parker seconded the motion. Motion approved.
