HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-02-01Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board February 1, 2016 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2016 in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Randy Jones. Other Board Members present: Steve Doty, Roger Sickler, Jason Reyes, Salman Bhojani, Mohib Nawab. Members absent: John Raab and Tiffany Smith. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Manager Terry Boaz, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, Special Events & Volunteer Coordinator Jerry Poteet, Recreation Assistant Ofa Faiva-Siale and Administrative Secretary Jordan Peterson. Visitors present: Leon Hogg, Jo Parris and Anna Attaway. INVOCATION Roger Sickler gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Jones asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the January 4, 2016 regular meeting. Mr. Reyes made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Mr. Bhojani. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Jason Reyes — Kiddie Carr Park & J.A. Carr Park: Light at gazebo broken. b. Salman Bhojani — Heritage & S. Euless Park: No items to report. c. Tiffany Smith — Midway Park & Blessing Branch: Not present. d. Roger Sickler — Bob Eden & Trailwood Park: Water fountains could use replacing. e. John Raab- Preserve & McCormick: Not present. f. Chairman Jones — Parks at Texas Star: Some fencing broken near Jacob's field. g. Mohib Nawab —Villages of Bear Creek & Reflection: Erosion on trail. h. Steve Doty — West Park & Wilshire: No items to report. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 1 II. Volunteer of the Month a. Chairman Jones announced the February 2016 Volunteer of the Month award goes to La Petite Academy. Jo Parris, Early Childhood Director with La Petite Academy really makes sure that their organization is involved in the community. The staff attended and volunteered at our Heritage Christmas Park event by helping the children write letters to Santa and make crafts. They are always looking for a way to jump in and help impact our events. Ms. Parris and Ms. Attaway accepted and thanked the board for the award. III. Business of the Tree Board Mr. Reyes reported the following for January: a. Total man hours for January 1-31 = 612 • 221.00 Horticulture • 140.00 Forestry • 120.00 Greenhouse • 131.00 Special Projects • 0.00 Training • Over 500 Christmas trees were chipped & the mulch was given away at Christmas tree recycle event. • Dead tree was removed at Kiddie Carr Park. • Dead trees were removed from the Villages of Bear Creek Park that had fallen over close to the trail. • Removed large stump at Midway Park. • Additional 320 man hours of tree and brush removal at the Preserve around ponds, recorded as pond maintenance. • Additional 146 man hours of tree and brush removal at The Villages of Bear Creek Park along trail. Recorded as trail maintenance. • Three Redbud trees were planted along trail at The Villages of Bear Creek Park. V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Staff Report — Jerry Poteet • Presented overview of special events throughout the year. • Discussed challenges and ways to improve volunteer program. b. Staff Report — Ofa Faiva-Siale • Presented overview of rental program. • Discussed challenges associated with rental program. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 c. Recreation Report —Suzanne Hendrickson • Wall carpeting project in gymnasium is almost complete. • Summer camp has added two new sites to the program to have availability for more children. • February 13/14 Historical Preservation Committee has Mike & Leland Brown preforming at the Museum. They will also announce the winners of the South Euless Elementary 4th grade historical drawing contest. d. Community Services Report — Ray McDonald • Discussed the trail erosion problem at Villages of Bear Creek and Bob Eden Park. • Informed the board of the new Arbor Daze Site. • Discussed the progress of the new 60/90 field at Parks at Texas Star. • Presented pictures of the new shade structures at South Euless Park. Chairman Jones thanked the staff for their reports. VI. Other New Business No new business. VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors No input from City Council Members or visitors.
